Hi guys - I'm new-ish to domains. What is the best way of getting a valuation? Estibot, domainindex? There seems to be a large variation in the values returned by these appraisal sites! any advice? many thanks,
ed.

valuation dont matter much and buyers dont go by it
valuation of a domain depends on what buyers want to pay for it and if it has traffic PR and backlinks

There is no magic formula that determines the exact value of a domain. An examination of comparable sales will give you a ballpark range. At the end of the day, a domain is worth the price that you are willing to accept.

These domain evaluation tools, should not be used for their valuation amount ( dollars it returns ). Domain evaluation tools can be used for other metrics they provide like avg. CPC, monthly search volume, recent domain sales etc. I also recently wrote a couple of articles about this. If you are interested, the link is in the signature.

Hope you find this helpful,

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm using domain index and have noticed that their appraisals are sometimes exactly what the domain sells for - is this because buyers/sellers are basing prices on it or is their database updated to reflect recent sale prices? The reason i'm interested is because a name I have (restyourself.com) is valued at almost 5 figures (9900) - is this realistic? I know you guys said it depends on seller and what person wants to pay etc but as a guide is this in the right 'ballpark'? Thanks again :)

Yes, one of the valuation metrics is the "recent sales" occurred. So a domain men.com is appreciated at $ 1,350,000 USD as it was sold for $1,320,000 USD.

I'm still a newbie, so I can't appraise your domain name. Though you should post it on the NP Appraisal forum ( http://www.namepros.com/domain-appraisals/ ) to get appraisals from the experienced domainers.

Hope this helps,
gct

Ok cool...
I'll do that, thanks :)
Interesting that it's based on recent sales too - cheers!

One thing the automated appraisal tools miss is that they give you an evaluation assuming that that value will be preceded by a sale which we all know is not true. There are millions of domains just sitting around that will not sell regardless of how cheap they are. This is a fact of life. Even if an auto appraisal says your domain is worth $5 that certainly does not mean someone will pay anything for it.

I know it may sound obvious but we tend to forget this when we see dollar signs. I would say the majority of us on here first used these and then after we registered a lot of duds and got involved we stopped using them altogether.

Although our appraisal forum is flawed I would have suggested using that but I see you have already made your way there. Take some of that advice and write it down. It will likely save you some money and make you money over time.

Look at past sales. Namebio, Dnjournal. For numeric domains, I regularly publish auction results. I think the best valuation tool is prior sales. Obviously if your domain is completely unique, these may not be that helpful. But if your domain is of a type (LLLL.com, NNN.org, etc.), prior sales data is extremely helpful, and can be helpful for word/generic domains as well.

A valuation based on keyword search volume is good if you are planning to develop the site. This value assumes that either people are typing the keyword directly in the browser (digital camera.com) or Google is giving value to a site with Exact match keyword.

A valuation based on past sale history is expected to indicate the exact value of the domain. But this may not be true always. Mostly in the medium to low price range, this could work. But at high end of the price, its the end user who is the best valuator.

It is worth what ever someone is willing to pay. The best way to get a valuation before trying to sell it is to have someone with valuation experience help you out. Sites are not very useful in getting a realistic value. I wish you the best!
