In your opinion, how many exact searches must a domain get for development to be worthwhile? What other factors do you look at?

Thanks

This is a great idea for a thread. I would love to hear some more expert opinions on this. I have heard that in some cases exact searches plays less of a role when the exact search phrase is highly specific and in a niche that tells you the visitor is ready with money in hand to spend. I am sure though no one wants to reveal their secret phrases. I can think of an example that might count such as "chimney repair."

I doubt that google, carbonite, yahoo, and a million other sites ever took exact searches into account.

You would be limiting yourself, both for domains and for developing sites.

Brand names usually have monetary backers and venture capitalists.

But honestly any domain name can be developed it just depends on what you are trying to achieve from the development itself.

Factors I do take into consideration though are exact search strings and what numbers they generate. I am not going to bother with a domain name that only gets 28 hits per month unless I really feel like the time and effort I put into it will pay off in the long run.

For DEVELOPING????

Zero.

Look at the value and potential of the entire niche, competing sites, and your own ability to create something that would give you an edge.

There are many different means of valuation in a domain name. Some names have intrinsic value in and of themselves, like business.com for example. Others have value because of what they have come to represent, google, com and yahoo.com are great examples. If I have a name with a great idea to develop it and the committment and resources to persue it, the name doesn't matter as much as the vision. The development and vision will take care of the traffic. I don't think google.com got very many organic suearches in 1995...

I agree with enlytend.

Higher searches may mean a tougher time ranking as everyone is chasing it.

In fact, you may have an easier time making more money developing and cornering a specific niche with fewer searches.

Plus look at ways to monetize, including affiliate program payouts, etc.

No point to rank highly for a specific keywords that have low ad competition and no products/services to market.

Hello,

Whenever i buy a domain i first look @ excat search, if you have a domain with 3000 to 10000 excat search you can develop that, also you look at the tail keywords related to that domains..

It helps to know how much excat it gets, But if you are going to do SEO and stuff you can rank with 0 excat also..

The more the excat better for you but competition would be high ..

I have targeted domains with a small number of monthly searches simply because my ROI would be insane for ranking high for that term.

Sure, maybe it's only a handful of visitors a day - but when they convert it pays.

For example - I own a site that gets about 20-30 visitors daily. It makes me $XXX weekly without skipping a beat. Would you take that kind of profit?

Take into account what people spend in the niche you are looking at. Do not just pay attention to monthly exact searches.

So many factors come into play.

The value of the traffic, the level of competition, your knowledge about the niche, the number of longtail terms associated with the keyword etc etc.
