Just read this news today at DnJournal.com.

    Source: http://dnjournal.com/lowdown.htm

Interestingly, CrosswordPuzzles.com was previously sold for 210,000 USD at Moniker in 2007.

    20% commission, therefore $49,996

So $199,984, loss of $10,016 Not including any taxes they may have to pay on the sale

I guess it depends if it was brokered or not, as commission varies from 10% to 20%

    Hi,

Overall this is very good sale for the seller. He did not made anything but he did not lose a lot at same time. He is very fortunate to get this price for such name in today’s time. I have seen so many names sold for Low Five Figure to Mid Five Figure in past sold for High $XXX to Mid $XXXX which can be huge loss to the owner after paying premium price in past. I know certain names which are listed for $5K bin which were sold for $25K in past. Some of them are technology related names which dies down due to changing technology. Some are good names but for some reason seller is willing to take a loss.

    Thanks

Yeah I would have thought a low xx,xxx price would have been fair so the price they got was great.

Well, yeah, if you put it like that.

After all though, they did lose cash money, they didn't break even.

So i'd say it was a bad acquisition back then, & an ok sale now..

but still, unless the domain generated the difference, it is still a financial loss. in terms of numbers.

Also, I would like to add that this name was sold by Frank Schillings Name Administration Inc. Back in the day (2007), parking was still lucrative. I am sure Crosswordpuzzles.com, as a domain name, would have received a lot of traffic.

Didn't Frank buy this in 2007? I doubt he paid any fees selling at his own marketplace.

    crosswordpuzzles.com
If someone just held on to this for 17 years and didn't develop and monetize is not very smart.
With the huge amount of people searching for crossword answers this site would have made a killing on ads. Or as a puzzle site and app download for phones. It is worth every penny. IMO

Yeah, take the selling price plus what was made in the past 10 years on parking and there is definitely a decent profit.

Agreed! When I saw this sale I was like, "Whahhhhaaatttt???"

Then I looked at the history of the domain and the price made more sense.

Still. The price then and the price now are still wacky. I would rather buy a nice 1 word domain and brand my site as a destination for crossword puzzles.

Previously sold for $210K. Looks like previous owner has broken even/loss on his original investment.

I agree, would have accepted any offer above $10K. Must be a heavy seller of Crossword Puzzles to dish out a quarter mil.

CrosswordPuzzles is a great name, better than Presto and Hosts in my opinion. If I owned it I might not sell it but if I did I'd want at least low 6-figures and maybe a million plus. It's the name of a product that can be delivered over the internet not to mention software and hard copy publications.
