Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

Cancer drug lessens the toxicity of a protein from COVID-19 virus

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) researchers have identified the most toxic proteins made by SARS-COV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19—and then used an FDA-approved cancer drug to blunt the viral protein's detrimental effects. In their experiments in fruit flies and human cell lines, the team discovered the cell process that the virus hijacks, illuminating new potential candidate drugs that could be tested for treating severe COVID-19 disease patients. Their findings were published in two studies simultaneously on March 25 in Cell & Bioscience.

Zero Covid deaths reported in London for second time this year

No deaths have been reported in London due to Covid-19 for the second time this year, official figures show.

Public Health England (PHE) figures for 28 March showed no deaths had been registered of patients within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test.

During a spike in cases during January, more 200 deaths a day linked to the virus were recorded in the capital.

London, the epicentre of the first wave of the pandemic last year, accounts for 12% of all UK coronavirus deaths.

CDC: Pfizer and Moderna Covid vaccines found 90 percent effective in 'real-world' study

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/heal...ines-found-90-percent-effective-real-n1262334

"The Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines are extremely effective in the real world, reducing infections by 90 percent in fully vaccinated people, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday.

The CDC study included 3,950 people in the U.S. who received either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine during the height of country's winter surge, from mid-December to mid-March. All were essential workers, including health care personnel and first responders from six states: Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, Oregon, Texas and Utah.

Two weeks after participants received both of the recommended doses, their risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection was reduced by 90 percent. (People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after they received their final dose.)

Even the first dose had an effect, reducing infection risk by 80 percent, the study found.

Importantly, the research also showed that both vaccines not only prevent people from getting sick with Covid-19, they also help prevent asymptomatic infections, in which people never develop symptoms."

Canada suspends AstraZeneca vaccine for adults 55 and under

TORONTO (AP) — Canada on Monday suspended the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine for people under age 55 following concerns it might be linked to rare blood clots.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization had recommended the pause for safety reasons and the Canadian provinces, which administer health in the country, announced the suspension Monday.

“There is substantial uncertainty about the benefit of providing AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines to adults under 55 given the potential risks,” said Dr. Shelley Deeks, vice chair of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.

Deeks said the updated recommendations come amid new data from Europe that suggests the risk of blood clots is now potentially as high as one in 100,000, much higher than the one in one million risk believed before.

Scientists develop test to detect the virus that causes COVID-19 even when it mutates

Scientists have developed a diagnostic test, which makes use of CRISPR, that can detect the virus that causes COVID-19 even after it has gone through mutations. Since viruses have the ability to evolve over time, a diagnostic test robust against potential mutations is a crucial tool for tracking and fighting the pandemic.

A team of scientists led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has developed a diagnostic test that can detect the virus that causes COVID-19 even after it has gone through mutations.

Called the VaNGuard (Variant Nucleotide Guard) test, it makes use of a gene-editing tool known as CRISPR, which is used widely in scientific research to alter DNA sequences and modify gene function in human cells under lab conditions, and more recently, in diagnostic applications.

Since viruses have the ability to evolve over time, a diagnostic test robust against potential mutations is a crucial tool for tracking and fighting the pandemic. Over its course so far, thousands of variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, have arisen, including some that have spread widely in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Brazil .

However, the genetic sequence variations in new strains may impede the ability of some diagnostic tests to detect the virus, said NTU Associate Professor Tan Meng How, who led the study.

Germany to restrict AstraZeneca use in under-60s over clots

https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/german-state-suspends-astrazeneca-vaccine-60s-76766477

"BERLIN -- German health officials agreed Tuesday to restrict the use of AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine in people under 60, amid fresh concern over unusual blood clots reported in a tiny number of those who received the shots.

Health Minister Jens Spahn and state officials agreed unanimously to only give the vaccine to people aged 60 or older, unless they belong to a high-risk category for serious illness from COVID-19 and have agreed with their doctor to take the vaccine despite the small risk of a serious side-effect.

Several German regions — including the capital Berlin and the country's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia — had already suspended use of the shots in younger people earlier Tuesday. That decision came after the country's medical regulator said its tally of the rare blood clots reported by March 29 had increased to 31, out of some 2.7 million doses of AstraZeneca administered in Germany so far.

Nine of the people died and all but two of the cases involved women, who were aged 20 to 63, the Paul Ehrlich Institute said."

Covid: new vaccines needed globally within a year, say scientists

The planet could have a year or less before first-generation Covid-19 vaccines are ineffective and modified formulations are needed, according to a survey of epidemiologists, virologists and infectious disease specialists.

Scientists have long stressed that a global vaccination effort is needed to satisfactorily neutralise the threat of Covid-19. This is due to the threat of variations of the virus – some more transmissible, deadly and less susceptible to vaccines – that are emerging and percolating.

Why do some people have side effects with COVID-19 vaccines while others do not?

According to Leslie Parent, vice dean for research and graduate studies in the Penn State College of Medicine, scientists do not fully understand why this is the case, but the differences could be due to a combination of a person’s age, genetics and past exposure to other viruses, including common-cold coronaviruses.

Parent noted that for the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines, the second dose may cause greater side effects than the first.

“That’s because the first dose primes the immune system to respond, while the second dose further stimulates the immune cells into action, which leads to some people having more side effects,” she said.

Your Immune System Evolves To Fight Coronavirus Variants

A lot of worry has been triggered by discoveries that variants of the pandemic-causing coronavirus can be more infectious than the original. But now scientists are starting to find some signs of hope on the human side of this microbe-host interaction. By studying the blood of COVID survivors and people who have been vaccinated, immunologists are learning that some of our immune system cells—which remember past infections and react to them—might have their own abilities to change, countering mutations in the virus. What this means, scientists think, is that the immune system might have evolved its own way of dealing with variants.

AB14961B-B8E6-4BAE-B2AF4EFC0432AB39_source.jpg

“Essentially, the immune system is trying to get ahead of the virus,” says Michel Nussenzweig, an immunologist at the Rockefeller University, who conducted some recent studies that tracked this phenomenon. The emerging idea is that the body maintains reserve armies of antibody-producing cells in addition to the original cells that responded to the initial invasion by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Over time some reserve cells mutate and produce antibodies that are better able to recognize new viral versions. “It’s really elegant mechanism that that we’ve evolved, basically, to be able to handle things like variants,” says Marion Pepper, an immunologist at the University of Washington, who was not involved in Nussenzweig’s research. Whether there are enough of these cells, and their antibodies, to confer protection against a shape-shifting SARS-CoV-2 is still being figured out.

Pfizer says Covid vaccine 100 percent effective in children ages 12 to 15

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/heal...ne-100-percent-effective-young-teens-n1262550

"Pfizer says its Covid-19 vaccine is safe and 100 percent effective in preventing the illness in teenagers ages 12 to 15."

"This is exactly the news that we hoped to hear," said Dr. Buddy Creech, a pediatric infectious disease expert at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

The vaccine, given in two doses three weeks apart, is already cleared for emergency use in people ages 16 and up.

The company plans to request emergency use authorization for 12- to 15-year-olds in the coming weeks, "with the hope of starting to vaccinate this age group before the start of the next school year," Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement."

A quick update before I head out the door.

I went to get the JJ vaccine this morning, that I spent considerable time locating. Although I had an appointment for the Pfizer this afternoon, the JJ is/was more appealing to me so I chose to drive 40 miles to get it. After getting there, registering and filling out the paperwork, I learned from the young woman with the medical cart that the Moderna vaccine is all they had...they had the JJ one day about two weeks ago.

This pharmacy is in a small town and it was slammed with people...it was actually causing a traffic jam in the one stoplight downtown. After expressing my feelings, I decided to take the 1st shot as the Moderna is second on my prefer list.

I was friendly and kind to the workers but I pulled the GM aside and let them know I would be making this known to local news and that I would be reaching out to the owner once I calmed down a bit. (It is a family owned pharmacy chain, less than ten units, that is aggressively buying out small town pharmacies)

Bait and switch is an ugly thing for a business to do and this company is doing it to get people to fill their chairs for the government payments they will receive...they messed with the wrong person!

BTW, just minimal reactions to the shot...nothing severe. The second shot comes in 3 weeks and that is when the most reactions happen for those that will have any. The link below is about another type of bait and switch that happened in California.

Sorry for your woes. Frustrating that businesses in the health care sector are using fear bait. At least you're being proactive. I had both Moderna shots, and in my case, the second dose was easier than the first. Be well. (y)

It seems that they caused you some inconvenience, but it's good that you were able to get your first shot anyway.

I am interested to know that in your assessment of the three available vaccine types how did you come up with your choice as to which ones you liked the best.

Was it just a personal preference or did you have some scientific data that helped you put the vaccines in the order that you have mentioned.

I have heard that some vaccines might be more suitable for older people, but that they were all very effective in preventing Covid.

IMO

Let's pray god animates the senses of those in Australia.

You teach holistic leaning classes, how could you possibly beLIEve this rubbish as sensible for health?

From the sounds of it, people are docile in Australia.

Hence the reason people ought to execise proper hygiene when wearing masks. I developed a cleansing spray prior to the pandemic which is similar to that which hospitals now use for disinfecting masks. Basically it is comprised of H2O2 (diluted pharmaceutical grade hydrogen peroxide) that neutralizes bacteria and evaporates like water when masks are exposed to sunlight. (y)

The point is people got Bacterial Pneumonia from wearing masks and breathing the bacteria in (while suffocating oxygen)

If you have phlegm, you should safely spit it out. That way you aren't at risk of breathing in mucus or saliva into your lungs, which is how bacterial pneumonia develops. Based on research, the claim that wearing face masks leads to bacterial pneumonia is FALSE.

While bacteria and other microorganisms can collect on masks over time, potential health risks are low as long as the masks are regularly washed, sanitized or disposed of. H2O2 also inactivates viruses.
