Correspondence with a Scammer!

After reading through the Sarah Murray thread and having received one of these bogus offers myself, I decided to engage the scammer to see where the conversation would go.

SCAMMER-------------------------------

To Whom It May Concern,

I'm interested in your domain name.
Can you drop me your desired price?
Did you get offers from other buyers?
If I can afford it I'll reply.
Selling & buying names is not my main business. Just another way to invest free money and make income.

Please keep our correspondence confidential.

Best regards,

Peter Weldon
Ph. D. President
Skalle Group

(The domain he inquired about was phobic.biz)

ME------------------------------------

Peter,
We have received offers before. Those offers were declined but we keep an open dialogue with these clients in the event our asking price is not met. Our asking price is currently $500 US dollars, down from $750.

SCAMMER------------------------------

500 USD. Ok.

I consider your name as an investment. In other words I'm going to sell your name later and make a profit. If I overpay I won't be able to make a profit in the future. It's very important for you and me to know the current market value of your domain.

So I need an independent appraisal of your name. Please note that I don't trust free or cheap appraisals. So I cannot accept appraisal from each and every site.

To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal companies in a forum
http://www.domaintalk.ourplace.com/Archive/23079.htm

Juck check this posting. After I verify an appraisal from you we'll continue our negotiations. How do you prefer to get paid: www.PayPal.com, www.escrow.com, check or wire?

Looking forward to your reply.

ME-----------------------------------

Peter,
I was able to get to the website just fine I just wasn't able to figure out how to order it. A form was asking for an order ID, which I don't have. Please provide detailed instructions on how to order the appraisal.

If this is where you want the appraisal from, that's fine with me, it's your choice because it's for you not me. It just doesn't seem like they're very good. No offense, but the site looks like it was designed by a child and you would think a domain appraiser would have a better domain than allfordomains.com.

Please send order instructions, I'm excited to proceed. Thanks.

(I wonder if he liked my critique of his site?)

SCAMMER------------------------------------

I did not know about that and visited their site

Found the following link
http://www.allfordomains.com/appraisal.htm

I read all the instructions.

Looks like you have to go through two steps
1. Order their service at
http://secure.emetrix.com/order/product.asp?PID=52892659&DID=50269251&ID=&Q=1&DC=&CUR=

2. After getting your order ID (sent after payment) just complete teh form.

If I'm wrong try to contact them direct.

ME-----------------------------------------

Now I get it. Thanks.
It looks like the more appraisals you buy, the cheeper they are.

I don't mean to be greedy but any chance you're interested in more of my names.
Take a look at the following link:

http://www.sedo.com/search/searchresult.php4?language=us&showuser=baobiz

Most of them are very affordable and have prices posted. Let me know if you want any of them and I'll get appraisals for those too. I'll stand by. Thanks.

SCAMMER--------------------------------------------

Sedo is acceptable as a broker but not as an appraiser because your names
are listed with them and they are not independent. They are interested in
ovepricing in order to get a fat commission. I need appraisals from a
company which is not interested in selling your domains.

(Nice scripted response. Did he even read my previous email?)

ME----------------------------------------------------

You misunderstand me. I don't want to get the appaisals at Sedo. I'll get the appraisals from allfordomains.com. I want to know if you're interested in buying more names from me. The link I provided shows the names I have for sale at Sedo.

If you're interested in more names than instead of ordering one appraisal at allfordomains.com, I'll order as many as needed and save money because the more you buy, the cheaper they are.

I know it sounds strange but we have to buy our dog a wooden leg so I really need to sell some domains. Let me know if you want any more domains in the list.

(Ok. I don't even own a dog and I've never seen a dog with a wooden leg but I wanted to see if this guy had any sympathy in his heart at all)

SCAMMER---------------------------------------

Sorry for misunderstanding.

Besides of phobic.biz , I'm interested in the following domains:
usedcredit.com
creditwriters.com
givingcredit.com
reserveaccounts.com
nursinginstructor.com
aidscases.com

Looking forward to the appraisal results.

(What a jerk, not only did he not express any sympathy for my poor dog, he's pushing hard for more appraisals. He's a scamming machine)

ME--------------------------------------------------------

So you want to buy all of those once we have the appraisals?

My dog is feeling better already!

SCAMMER------------------------------------------------

I must see the appraisal results first. Hope they will show good potential.

(Heartless! His answers are getting shorter, maybe he's on to me)

ME-------------------------------------------------------

Peter,

I know we had agreed on a deal but I just got a higher offer for phobic.biz. I hate to go back on my word but the offer was $250 higher than yours and I've got my dog to worry about so I must accept this offer. Please accept my apologies.

I hope we can do business in the future. You seem like a very decent fellow.

END-----------------------------------------------------------------

This is still an open dialogue. I haven't heard back from him yet. Any ideas where I should go with this? I'm expecting him to inquire about the other names or to match the offer on phobic.biz. I was thinking of telling him my credit card isn't working and I'd like to Paypal the money for the appraisals directly to him. I'm interested in seeing how he responds to that.

I'll update this post with his response.

Where would you go with it?

Odds are good that the scammer can read your post in this public forum. Don't be surprised if he simply stops responding.

Yes. It's fine if he does. It's a fun diversion but I really need to concentrate on more productive things.

Ask all scammers to pay $900,000,000,000,000.99 USD. They'll okay it!

May your imaginary dog receive its wooden leg soon, LOL.

Youd think the likes of Sedo e.g. would be able to see which IP addresses spend seriously long periods of time surfing their lists.

So they could then block them or report them to the authorities.

I dunno, i just feel these Russian guys are making some serious dough doing this (or else they would nt have been doing it for what seems like an age now) and none of the sites where they must trawl up their victims from seems at all interested.

Sedo, Afternic etc etc should and must be able to do something.

Oh, and ps, you wanna see some pro scam baiters, goto 419fun.com some seriously funny stuff goin on there...

Do NOT use PayPal to send him money!

... they'll let him keep it. They let scammers keep the money if the product they scam others out of is intangible.

I would never actually pay them. I was hoping their greed would cause them to let their guard down enough to provide a legitimate email address. I don't think that would happen so I was looking forward to the excuse they could supply on why they couldn't accept a paypal payment.

It's all water under the bridge now. It's been over a week and the scammer hasn't responded. I've got a feeling that they're amoung us monitoring these forums.

That's just dumb. You can't block or report someone for surfing your site for long periods of times.

Lol... That's the owner of that Appraisal website and he scams everyone. After you get it appraised he will say sorry or something and won't buy any domains. Lol...

LOL, that part about your dog needing a wooden leg was especially funny. I love talking to scammers like that :)
