Hi,

I'm a freelance writer. I started in print, have done online news and articles and I'm starting to get more and more key word/seo type work.

Fine. I can work keywords into articles and posts no problem. Well written and linkable too.

I'm starting a new website and I have a question about my new domain name.

I registered three versions of my domain. My company name uses the word Centric, which is usually preceded with a dash... -centric. So let's call my site Name followed by Centric followed by Writing. So my domains are: Name-Centric.tld NameCentricWriting.tld and Name-CentricWriting.tld. I plan to use one as my main domain and have the others forward to the main domain.
But, which one should be the main? The last one I mentioned, Name-CentricWriting is out. I don't like it. Just bought it to cover-my-butt. I like the two word domain, shorter, but it has a dash. The three word domain is longer, but no dash. Easier to tell people what it is on the phone. The phone/radio test.

Like I said, I'm getting more content/seo work so I'd hate for my domain to look like I know nothing about SEO. I just can't decide. What do you guys think?

Thanks

The hyphens are problematic because users will forget to type in that hyphen, and you will have traffic bleed.

If you could get NameCentric (in dotcom, of course) on the aftermarket, that would be your best best. If that's not possible, then I suggest NameCentricWriting as your main domain.

On the other hand, IF you think that your SEO/keyword content will help you rank high, then the hyphen might not matter much, BUT you will, as your name gets known, still get some traffic bleed.

Personally I don't like dashes in domain names. NameCentric.tld is already taken? If so. Have you thought about buying it from the current owner?

I don't really understand why you have to have a site name (Name)and job name (Writing) and a company name (Centric) all in the same domain name. I would stick to two words. Is WriteCentric.tld taken?

Yes, NameCentric and is taken...and it's priced out of my range in the aftermarket.

The original plan was just to go with the three word. I think it's pretty easy to remember especially because I'm a writer and writing is the third word. I do wish I could go shorter. I guess I can, but like you guys said, I lose a bit of traffic. And, a little bit to a freelancer is a lot.

NameCentric.NET and .ORG, are available for reg fee (as of this posting). I have a couple of enduser .NETs that rank on top.

Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I wasn't clear. I used "Name" as a substitution for my actual name. My way of asking a question without dragging my actual domain name into the conversation.

All the TLDs are taken?

You didn't answer this question. Is WriteCentric.tld taken?

The term you are using as your business/domain name... is it a phrase that gets actual search numbers? (using google's keyword tool)

If it's more of a brandable term and not a search phrase, you're not going to get many natural visitors so the domain is less important than your marketing and seo of your site.

If you want to find a domain that's available to reg, and which has actual searches already, welcome to PM me and I'll see if I can find/spin one for you (free, I do it all the time).

If having a search term as a domain name isn't that important and you plan to drive traffic to your site via marketing and seo-friendly-articles, then the shorter the dn the better, and I can try spin one of those for you as well, if you want to PM me with some keywords that describe what you're doing exactly.

Welcome to Namepros, good luck :)
