Contacted by domain broker....what to do? First time sale!

Hi there,
I have domains listed for sale through Sedo. I was expecting the Sedo site to handle the sales but I was contacted via email about one of my domains.

Says:
- client can offer a good price in USD
- they offer to pay escrow fees

I have no idea what this domain is really worth, but the competion is low for the keyword and the SEOV is over $100 USD/day.

Should I let the person make an offer via Sedo the way I thought it would happen, and let it go to auction - this is what I feel inclined to do....or should I get back to them with a price???

It sounds like an appraisal scam. Tell him to submit an offer through Sedo. If he comes back and mentions anything about an appraisal cut off communications. These guys run the appraisal sites and trick you into paying for a garbage appraisal.

I should also mention, with a legitimate buyer that contacts you via email, you can feel free to negotiate outside of Sedo if you wish. Both options are normal practices.

Thanks, I'd never heard of an appraisal scam!
Good to know what is normal. I think I just feel less at risk of anything dodgy through Sedo. Nice to have my natural instict confirmed.

def sounds like a scam email - I agree - if he wants the domain tell him to make an offer through sedo.

I have been getting tons of scam emails - people telling me they will pay $XXX for domains and then I never hear from them again

I wouldnt be to quick to throw this out as a scam. I have done this in the past and know many people who do it as well. (Look for a domain see it parked do a who is and email vs going through sedo)The theory is if you make an offer away from sedo and agree to pay escrow you can get it a minimum of 15% cheaper (sedos cut)and seller still profits as much as they would have and you get a 15% discount

by the way I would have said use moniker escrow until a recent situation came about with confideltiality

oh yeah and if they ask for an apprasial tell them as long as they pay for it up front lol

Ya, I'm not saying that anybody contacting you by email is involved in an appraisal scam, but this one has all the marks of being one. Says he's a 'domain broker' who's client is able to pay good money and contacts somebody new to domaining about a presumably recently regged domain.

I did recommend replying and to cut off communications once the appraisal is mentioned, which I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

Yes, it's a scam. In the email I got it has this link http://www.the name pros.com/Archive/305624908.htm Note the similar domain name. Dodgy as.

He asked would I accept $10,000 for a domain worth (optimistically) $40 and went on to mention domain apprasials.:gl:
