Computer Problem

People. :snaphappy:

There is something evil with my computer at the moment and I'd like you guys feedback on the matter, if you have any off course.

None of my folders want to open from my desktop. When I click on My Computer, or My Documents or on any other folder on my desktop the little 'loading' icons shows then nothing happens. After nothing happens my computer persists on being very slow or me, or crashing.

I've tried running my latest virus scanner but nothing 'infecting' came up, just some stupid potentially unwanted ad software, which I'd deleted all of apart from one, because it couldn't delete due to it being 'write protected' or something.

This problem is really pissing me off to say the least. It's only 8am and I've had to restart 6+ times this morning. I haven't had any work down, and I'm not going to get any work done until I can fix this little problem.

I'd appreciate any feedback you have on the matter. Thanks. :)

This used to happen to me under Win98 quite a lot. I think it had something to do with my having too many files under one folder. If I recall right, adding more RAM fixed my problem temporarily. I then re-arranged my files, and later moved to XP.

I hope that helps.

I've only had the computer running since December 24th 2003. I wouldn't expect to have to upgrade or format it just yet.

Apollo, I'm running a 512MB RAM Windows XP computer! :p Not much I can upgrade to! (Oh yeah, nice avatar! ;) )

Ed, I'm at work right now, but I'll get you the name of the file when I get home.

Also, has anybody else downloaded the Excel file from this post:

Not putting any bad words onto the website or the member, however I only noticed this problem straight after downloading this file...

Thanks for your help so far. I REALLY REALLY need to get this sorted.

If you are not using adaware software get it free for personal use at:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

I have caught stuff with this that the virus scan did not get.

Good luck.

Thanks guys for your replies.

I'm downloading the adware software from lavasoftusa.com now.

Thank you Chris for confirming about the download. If I remember correctly, when I clicked to close or open the download, my computer went slow and my broswer Windows went funny. I then click on My Documents to find the downloaded file and thats when I noticed it stopped loading for me. I guess that problem was from before that download, but I'm not sure what, because I haven't downloaded nor installed anything else.

Ed, thank you very much for your PM. I used the advice you mentioned to track down some other adware on my computer, and as far as I know, have successfully wiped all that shows up on my virus scanner.

Now just to find this bitch of a thing that isn't opening my folders... It's seriously starting to irritate me now, because I can't do jack without accessing my files...

I'm seriously considering formatting, but it will be a long haul installing all my programs ad files again, and configurating things.... D-:

EDIT - Just done a scan with Ad-Aware... I got 178 item results...

I'm viewing the results right now. If I click next, will it clean/delete these files? Is there any risk involved? Is it safe to delete these files without any problem reflected?

Thanks. :)

It's safe because it only identifies specifically known adware programs. You can review the list of things first though if you're concerned you might lose a program you like. My sister's computer had 800+ item results, all removed and it greatly improved the system performance.

I've been through the process, and deleted the files, but unfortunately the original problem persists...

D-: I have no idea what I'm going to do next...
