Computer help (Restarts it self/freezes)

The last few days my computer will just restart it self every few hours. Every once in a while, instead of it restarting, it would just freeze the screen and I would have to manually restart it. Now, it won't even boot up. I would start the computer and it wouldn't get pass the windows loading screen before it would freeze up.

Everything has worked flawless with the computer up until the last few days. It is a few years old, but has been taken care of real good.

Could it be a hardware problem in the computer? I just ran Norton AntiVirus full system scan, so I don't think it's a virus.

Advice? Suggestions? Anything is appreciated.

Thanks :)

PS: I'm on a different computer, so no comments on "Well, how are you on" :P

Well in terms of a hardware problem . . . did you recently install something or make changes to anything.

I would defrag your computer drive. . . but you seems stuck. I first would suspect a virus but as long as your virus definitions are up to date and your scan is clean I would doubt that's what it could be.

1) Have you downloaded ANY software from the net?
2) Have you opened ANY wierd attachments in your email?
3) Have you made any recent changes to your computer's hardware?

Hope you can figure it out.

If you can manage to start it up, go to a command prompt and run:
Code:
chkdsk /f /r /x
When it asks you if you want to shedule the disk check for next reboot, select Y.

When you next reboot the computer it'll run a scan for bad sectors/files and attempt to fix any.

Thanks for the replys, but it must of been hardware failure. Which makes since as it would be fine for 8 hours, then the next day it would only last 6 hours, ect. ect. So it was failing.

Oh well. New computer has been ordered... but I lost every PSD and every one of my files. :'(

Go to Start.. Right click on My Computer and select Properties. Than click on the Advanced tab in the new window and than under Start-up and Recovery select Settings and make sure Automatic Restart under System Failure is unchecked..

Thats the only thing without looking at your computer I could think of.. Hardware failures don't cause it to restart unless you have something that is lose and keeps randomally getting disconnected.. Try hitting your computer (slightly) and see if it restarts.. If it doesn't count that out. The reason they don't is when a hardware is malfunctioning (HD especially they are noticeable by noise, rather than malfunction until it is too late in which case it won't restart.. It just will turn off..

The only thing is actually I just thought of is overheating.. When the CPU gets too hot the computer automatically restarts (can be changed in BIOS).. Aswell as the RAM and the GPU generally just dies out (screen goes black).. So maybe look into cleaning your computer and making sure the CPU is properly taken care off too keep it nice and cool B-)

It is more than likely the OS..

Check your pc power supply.. one of my friends had the problem and his power supply what cause it..

I know this might sounds silly but try to clean your pc with dust blower too .. dust can do alot to PCs .. i worked in hardware for a while.

try to format ur PC. it works for me because the windows registry generally slows down and starts giving errors

this way u will know whether it is a software problem or ahardware problem
