Computer Mouse messing up

Maybe someone can help me with this...

A few months ago my mouse would go crazy ever few hours, the slightest movement would send the mouse all over the screen multiple times and it clicks too which would cause a few things to either close or get messed up. This would last about 20-30 seconds and I was able to move the mouse where I wanted it.

A few weeks ago my mouse would stop responding completely every once in awhile, but would work again after a few secoonds. It would still go crazy (Like what is mentioned above) - but at different times.

Now, 2 days ago, my mouse will freeze up and won't work at all until I restart the computer. I'm still able to use my keyboard when the mouse freezes up, so I know it's not my computer freezing.

Anyone know what could be wrong? I'm thinking it's the computer chip that controls my mouse. I don't think it's a virus, as it has gotten worse in segments, instead of at the same time and my virus cleaner didn't catch anything.

Looking for opinions... Thanks! :)

Have you tried plugging in a new mouse? Could just be the mouse itself. Is it a wireless mouse? If so, your batteries might be bad, or the signal is getting messed up somehow.

No idea what's wrong with yours but my mouse cursor travels slowly across the screen while the mouse is idle.. doesn't click anything, just moves across the screen.

I haven't bothered trying another mouse yet.. I usually buy mine for a $1 at Dollar Tree  Time to dig one out of the drawer!

Mine does that too, but it's not the actual mouse, but rather the touchpad that's on the laptop in question... which leads me to my next question for Fewski if the computer is a laptop or a desktop.

If it's a desktop my only other suggestion is to download new mouse drivers or see if they're functioning correctly in your control panel...

Also what kind of connection is it? PS/2, or a USB connection? If it's a PS/2 one option is to go to Radioshack or something and get a PS/2 to USB convertor. It might just be your input on your computer, and especially if you have other USB devices you know work, you should have no problems with this method. If it's USB and other USB devices work, then I have no idea.

It is a Desktop computer and I'm using the PS/2 slot. I like your idea, I'll go and give that a try tommorow.

Thanks for the ideas! :)

Yeah, gotta love those Dollar Trees! I have several backup mice, USB connectors, and tons of sticker paper, glitter paper, CD labels, jigsaw and magnet kits for inkjet.. all from the Dollar stores.

I suppose its worth checking if the drivers have mucked themselves up... check if everything is okay in system info->device manager, If so check that all the slots in the back of the PS/2... although The Equivocate's idea is very good :P

I'm finding it increasingly hard to find a PS/2 mouse now... and all the new computers aren't even bothering to ship PS/2 ports with them -_- damn Dell.

Just an update...

Went out and bought a USB mouse, plugged it in and went a full 24 hours and it didn't react like it did before once! :)

Thank you all who helped me solve the problem. :tu:
