Lately I've been inundated with companies & individuals trying to sell me sub par names they don't even own. I get 5 or so queries a week from bottom feeders, scalpers, companies that find I have a keyword name in common and they try to sell me a really crappy name that in all cases they don't even own. In most cases they're names that are dropping, or are available to buy now on GD @ $5-$10.

I kinda scratch my head and wonder is it a numbers thing for them, they survey 100 people and eventually get someone who bites? I assume most people are going to research and look up the whois like me, but maybe not?

Yes it is a numbers thing, they know the smart people will check stuff out, they know some will be like ok I will take that name, if it is not expensive some might not do the research.

Same here. Lots of emails with @net.hr addresses.

It's one thing if it's a name someone actually owns, but lately the queries I'm getting are names on the drop list at tdnam, or will soon be available. How can a company, fake person sell a name they don't even own?
These are in all cases really terrible names. They are bottom feeders, hustlers. Kinda irks me.

I posted about this the other day. Someone emailed me offering a name that just dropped for $500. I reg'd it, emailed him back saying I'll take it for $500, never heard back.

Think of it as a free advisory service. Roughly once a year I get a reg fee domain out of it that I actually want. :D

I don't think there's any way of stopping these people, if you don't have WHOIS privacy, so be grateful you don't receive hundreds per day...

...although the latest ones, it surprises me that Gmail put them in my main inbox, not in Updates or Promotions - when they do belong in Spam.

My favorite is when they try to sell me a name I'm dropping.
