Comcast Cutting Off Heavy Internet Users

Well, this certainly bites for those of use who use the internet to listen to audio or watch videos.. glad I don't use Comcast!

Comcast has warned broadband Internet customers across the country to curb their downloading or wind up on the curb.

The company has a bandwidth limitation that, if broken, can result in a 12-month suspension of service. The problem, according to customer complaints, is that the telecom giant refuses to reveal how much downloading is too much.

The company, which a few years ago advertised the service as “unlimited” has an “acceptable use policy” which enforces the invisible download limit.

I am kind of glad that I don't have comcast. I really wish they would give you as much bandwidth as long as you aren't pirating anything.

The word "unlimited" sure attracts people. I think Comcast finally realized that they lured enough customers to their company using the "unlimited" word and its now time to make their profits.

It has been common knowledge for at least a year among the pirating community (yeah, I chill with some shady guys) that comcast will cut you off for heavy bandwith consumption. Every couple weeks we get someone crying for getting cut off, and they usually use at least several hundred gigabytes in a month. by several I mean around 500 at least.... That is impossible to reach in normal usage, you need not fear

Between all I do, I bet I use over 100 GB a month thru legitimate use tho I'm thru Suddenlink.

Comcast always had a invisible limit on how much bandwidth you could use. The reason they dont tell you a limit is because they dont have one. All they are worried about is that residential customers might be using their internet lines for business purposes such as running web and email servers and other heavy bandwidth products. The thing with cable internet is that it is a shared line meaning if your neighbor next door starts doing some intensive internet activity, it could effect how your internet works. Thats why comcast says your connection is cabable if reaching certain speeds but often doesnt depending upon how much your neighbors are using their internet as well. Not to mention most web surfers are not really downloading at their 6mb/sec limit anyways since most servers cannot handle an uplink to your computer at that speed when it is being hit by many other people for downloads. Not that im sticking up for comcast, but in reality there has always been monitoring going on for this and I doubt the average internet users will be complaining. Because if this effects the average internet user and his/her activities, then comcast is going to lose tons in sales. If comcast feels your internet usage is far too intensive for a residential customer, they will simply ask you to upgrade to a business cable internet service through them. Bandwidth intensive users should have the business plan since thats what its for. :)

Yeah well it's assumed that someone doing over 1 Terabye in bandwidth from a home line isn't doing legitimate internet use.

comcast is quite popular, and some people translate popularity to mean quality, and this is not really true. I use RCN, and its been great so far. glad i'm not using comcast. no need to deal with their issues. The US broadband market is limited by lack of competition. You have a few big players consuming the whole market. No wonder we're behind S. Korea, Japan etc in broadband quality and standards.

If people really wanted higher speeds from their campanies, then we should all go out and do just that, petition the cable and DSL companies to give us faster internet.

Internet is already fast enough for the average home user. You will never use 6mb/sec which is what comcast cable has. Many web servers and what not can barely handle 2mb/sec uplink to your PC when under high load usage nevermind 6mb/sec. Instead of asking for faster speeds, you should request that companies get better uplinks for their servers. But now after saying this, it appears the whole conversation is beginning to get off topic here. I believe the initial topic was about comcast putting limits on how much you use their services. Which I think is a good idea to begin with. They always had limits but they have never and wont probably be set in stone. All they do is monitor to make sure you arent using more than what an average residential user should be using. If you need industrial types of connectivity to the internet then you should be using Comcast Business not Comcast Residential plans. Comcast Business plans allow you to achieve those intense internet loads they dont like on residential plans.

"640K ought to be enough for anybody." - Bill Gates, 1981

Of course, he was talking about memory, but just goes to show what future needs and capabilities will be...and how what we have now is never enough.

Going back to the dial-up days, unlimited was rarely truly unlimited in all respects.

Ie. With Comcast, it's unlimited in that aspect one can stay connected all the time and even be actively transferring data, though not too fast, all day ...

It's often been power-users, like em or hate em, who have blazed the way for the rest of to us to get:

* Unlimited dial-up instead of pay per minute

* Unmetered usage instead of paying by the view, post, etc

* Email ability to users at other dial-up services (they weren't called ISPs back then) via the internet

* Unlimited email - it started out very limited and expensive for most

* Unlimited internet - like above, it was very limited at first

One could go on and on ... what people expect and demand will continue to increase as technology continues to advance...

If one wants to see what the average user will get in the future, all one need do is look at other countries like Korea - it's only a matter of time before 10 MB per second is standard in the U.S. ... Comcast and others are well on their way there - they are dragging their feet to maximize profits on their current offerings, but make no mistake, they have the capability to greatly increase bandwidth much higher and will eventually whether they like it or not to keep up with the competition.

They do this probably to weed out people who set up wifi and let all their neighbors jump on for free.

As long as the ceiling is set way high over the max possible use for say a four family household, I don't think I could complain too much.

haha...
Well my ISP has a exact limit 60 GB a month. They even have a personal Bandwidth meter if you log in to their site!

Not Me.

I think it goes to what is reasonable. If I enter into an agreement with a supplier of electricity for them to meet my requirements, and the typical requirements for such electricity to people like me are XXXX per month for $50, and then one day I start asking for XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX per month for $50, then the supplier would seem to be justified in his refusal to fill my order.
