The Australian Government will be introducing a Mandatory Filter that will operate via every ISP to filter out ANY site that has pornography or violent content.

The Freedom of the internet is at risk.

Australia who already has some of the worlds SLOWEST broadband rates will now have download time affected by as much as 70% Slower due to the ISP filters.

Why make it mandatory??? Australia is not a DICTATORSHIP, if people wish to censor there internet use, there is enough filtering software available!

I'll Gurantee that 95% of filtered content ends up being a mistake.

Fair enough to filter out illegal sites, but any site that deals with porn or violence ???

:'( :'( :'(

Actually, porn filtering is one thing that I liked about China's great firewall. The boobie traps need to be disarmed in order for the Internet to become more decent.

the difference between this and the great firewall is that australia's censorship can be flushed down the drain since they have democracy and can vote new heads of their governments. perhaps a few years later we will see this filter disappear or lessened greatly.

whereas the party in charge of china has been the only party to reign in what, 50 years? lol

Conroy said Internet users would be able to access uncensored material by opting out of the service
Uh...is this optional or mandatory? I'm confused.

Then again, it's a plan so far.

Your right, turns out you can 'Opt Out'. The thing is though currently any Australian can call up their ISP to implement Filters if you wish to block certain content which is 'Opt In'.

However the government will be making the filter Mandatory for every ISP and customer unless the customer calls up and places themselves on an opt-out list.

The concern that the media has brought up is that Anyone who 'OPTS-OUT' of the service would raise 'suspicion' as to why you are Opting out.

How about calling the ISP and ask for filtering out the governments websites? :hehe:

This censorship will make the internet faster since the filtering system already blocked certain porno websites.

Don't worry something similar will be heading the way of the USA if they have their way. It's apparently being drawn up here in Japan as I type this. :'( Piece by piece the internet is being locked down globally (unless we all do something to protect "her" that is).

IMO it should be an opt in thing not an opt out, i personally don't look at porn (NOT saying i never have or that i am against it) BUT i believe i should have the right to if i so desire

i should not have to opt out(should have to opt in) but i will be opting out just for the principle of it all

Not a fan of children watching porn. I think that this is a step in the right direction. There is a good chance that it will cause problems in the short term but I think that it will benefit the country in the long term. It's not like it is taking away freedoms. It is just making filtered sites the default instead of the other way around. Protecting children is a good thing.

I believe in free speech and choice but porn companies and people are violating that daily by abusing typo's and average terms to lure people to porn. It is then that it is wrong and not a choice. If you accidentally make a Disney typo you should NEVER be redirected to porn, that is not a choice and those people should be arrested or hung in the town square, they are aiming for kids. They are equal to worst the pedophile down the street in anywhere USA. Ignorance is no excuse. Porn damages kids for life, you cannot erase an image in your mind! Adults can makes choices.
