Hi,
since I have been out of the market for several years, I am trying to jump back in without mistakes.
My question is pretty simple and straightforward:

I just found a single word .com (character of a local tv cartoon) with 40.000 monthly searches according to google, and a number of other one well above 10.000.

Since those names make little sense except for the characters they represent, should I still register them without even thinking and add a minisite for each, just based on the number of google searches?

If there aren't any trademark issues, I'd say go for them. But for me, it sounds like they might have TM issues. In which case you should stay clear of them. Ask yourself, why are they not already registered?

Definitely agree with Stub, a lot of names with that much search volume that are still available must be trademark. But of course you can always double check here:

Also like you said if it is a character name then it might be interesting because if the name is common and generic there may not be a trademark, if this is the case then go for it. But if it has a trademark then it will just be a waste of time as sooner or later after you get it the company/brand will make it you take it down and give it back.

I confirm no trademark involved.
Indeed I would be very surprised if it would be, being it just a cartoon character name, resembling somehow english.

Google's keyword tool reports 40.500 monthly searches for the word.

To answer the question, why it was not regged yet?
I am not sure, but wouldn't be the first time my tool digs some hidden gem!
