I am working on a non-profit making wiki project and have successfully acquired both .com and .org versions of the domain name. .org fits the nature of the site and therefore I’m inclined towards developing .org instead of .com. Some friends of mine prefer .com from SEO viewpoint. What do you guys think about that? Any help will be highly appreciated.

As far as I am aware, they should be about the same SEO wise. If .ORG fits better I would use that then just redirect any .COM traffic.

it is trendy to use the .org & since you have the .com, you have even less to fear.

I think you should develop the .ORG and DNS forward the .COM to the .ORG. Make darn sure to maintain ownership of both domains obviously.

As others have said.
If you own both, you're fine with a .org for an org.
The only time .org gets tricky is when you don't own the .com and are using the .org in a conventional marketing campaign. You can assume that the "dot com instinct" will cause some prospective users to bleed off. Still, it isn't usually that bad and .org is almost universally recognized for what it is, so no even without the .com, it isn't that big of a deal. With .com ownership secured, I'd argue it's a total non issue.

For SEO, it has been argued that a 'google trusted' .org is actually better than all things equal on an eponymous .com. SEO is still largely undefined and these things aren't as quantifiable as we'd like, but the discussion has been raised.

seomoz has done the same thing. They own the com extension and is redirected to the org website.

I think with huge sites like Wikipedia and Craigslist, .org is gaining a foothold, but .net isn't so bad either, with many companies switching to it when the .com isn't available.

To be honest, no one here knows your name or your mission like you do.

It's your name - spend some good (sober and clear-minded) time sounding out both of them - take very frequent breaks during this process - and come out of it knowing which one you like better.

If it's a non-profit organization and you own both domains, this is a no-brainer. Even a drunk would know that .ORG is the best choice. IMHO.

Since it is a non-profit organization, you should go with .org domain.

Agree all above me. Use .org domain to use and then I think redirect the .org to .com domain that only my opinion anyway.

Yes if the .com is available then grab it too for redirecting.

From an SEO perspective, all those extensions are as good as each other. If you're looking to build a site around your business, then you should definitely get a .com name. You don't want to take second best and risk one of your competitors (or whoever owns the .com) taking some of your traffic.
