The .COM is considered king today because it was the first launched TLD, for example if the first would be .poop launched gTLD i m sure it would be the king today.

com net org gov edu mil, all around the same time. RFC 920 (Oct 1984).

Which leads to the point that there must be (is) a higher TLD than the TLD .com, there must be a highest TLD and I am glad to have found out which one it is.
Let me guess... .god? :xf.smile:

This is an interesting concept, but there is a bit more to why .com became the de facto domain extension other than being the first. I believe it's along the lines of a natural psychological connection with the actual "COM" characters themselves, but I can't find where the heck I read it!! It was here on Namepros, and someone had broke it down nicely.

Wish I would have bookmarked it. Anyhow, being .com first certainly gave it an advantage that's for sure. But as far as another TLD having the same result if it was released then, hard to say. Most nexTLDs are specific rather than generic with regards to using a domain with it. Would have had to been something else generic like .web, .page, .site, .website or .online. Even dot-one or dot-xyz.

If there would have been no dot-com, likely dot-net would be reigning by this point.

Haven’t you guys heard of downfall of kings. I haven’t heard of any king who has lived forever. If you are saying .com is king the same king logic applies here. Kings comes and go. It is foolish to think that .com will be there forever. Google can make it die in a matter of weeks. Tweak the algorithm to give more ranking to new extensions. That’s it. End of the game.

King is COM because it is common, in fact many words even non English ones have com in it, maybe because of this it is so popular.

of course
there is no doubt
The only doubt I have is whether people are aware that a king is not the highest in rank and what that actually means in relation to a TLD that is called king.

.com is king but it is not top.

That is unless the name is registered by an entity other than an individual.

In this case, a company which does not have a centralised address or centralised point of ownership.
Even if a domain name is "registered by a "decentralised" company", there is a person who is ultimately in charge of it.

There is nothing called forever. Everything has a beginning and end. Dot-com will have its downfall. Time will tell
Long live .com, the king (who is not top).

.com will be king as long as .com will exist but it will never be top.

May be .com has came first, by default it comes to mind immediately...also it appeals everyone.

I think the best part, it has reasonable renewal cost...unlike .co (almost three times)

Of course there are many other strong points which already being discussed!

Only when it comes to the question of which TLD is king, .com immediately comes to my mind.
But if the question is which TLD is top, it isn't .com, because .com is king (and therefore not top since kings are not the highest in rank).

That being said, .com certainly doesn't appeal to everyone, although it is generally respected as king.

In this YouTube video (from nP) from 2017, the managing director of nP, Edward Zeiden, says:

"(... a lot of people know,) .com is king (...)"

YouTube | Interview: Joe Styler of GoDaddy

https://www.youtube.com/embed/NUbEFBT6NV0?start=651

NOTE The video starts where he says it.

What he does not say is that a king is not the highest in rank.
