Hi folks,
I'm looking for some insight into domain appraisal. One can probably make a case for valuation purely on traffic, but is there some notion of vanity? That is to say, do people/companies buy domains simply because they want them? What is it called when they do, "vanity"?

Back to traffic, I'm guessing that the value of traffic varies. Some traffic is curious, other traffic is ready to spend money. How does one measure this aspect of the traffic?

I'd love you know what you think about the value of cold.com and why.

Also, I'd be interested in your thoughts on the best approach to selling it. I want to maximize value. If that means holding it another couple of years, then I will do that. Thoughts?

Thanks for your time.
Dave

$1000-$2000, are you serious?! I see this being a million dollar domain! Hold on and wait for that end user and sell it for a lot!
No, of course I wasn't serious. (Take a look at the "hehe"...)

The only foreseeable issue I can see with the keyword "Cold" is how do you monetize it? (Which is the biggest factor on value). The other keyword domains you mentioned, would be immensely more valuable today because of their potential usage. Now, Im not suggesting that Cold.com isnt a very valuable name, its definetly worthy of xxx,xxx - however the only marketing concept I can apply to it, that makes sense - is Air Conditioning Systems or AC Repair. But even still, it wont get direct type in traffic unless branded well.

I love the domain, and congrats on being wise enough at the time to grab it and hold it..... I think your wife will be happy with your investment.

You don't think it would work for cold medicine? TheraFlu and Delsym both bid on the "cold" keyword in adsense. Hard to appraise a true generic like this though. I don't think it is a million-dollar name; I'd say mid $xxx, xxx.

You did make me scratch my head for a minute. I had to ask myself a more interesting question. Why don't I associate the keyword "cold" with having or catching a "cold".... I think primarily because I wouldn't search for a cold remedy online...

However, when checking the advertising vs keyword searches, the term by itself "cold" receives about 1/3 the search traffic that "Air Conditioner" does.... The other issue revolves around how would one of the cold remedies use this domain name? They wouldn't directly profit from it, because it would be used mostly as a branding tool. (Who buys, cold remedies online?)

Inversely you could literally sell AC Units and Services from the site, if you approached it from that angle. It might be worth it for a big AC Manufacturer or Distributor or even a Directory service for repair/maintenance.

Just my 2 Cents.

If you got kids or grandkids (or will have kids), hold the name while developing it a little. If you're a senior and want to move to Florida to enjoy your retirement (and you don't have kids), try to get a decent deal and enjoy your retirement. That's what I would've done.

Congrats on the name.

worse than that is 0-NP$

Seriously though, the fact that there are many uses for cold.com from beer to drugs to ac to heating equipment (patio heaters, central heaters) to fridges to anything that you can measure the temperature of means that this is worth $,$$$,$$$. Get on the phone to sell it directly.

Remember us when youve moved on and up! :'(

The cold remedy business is HUGE. Your talking Billions and Billions of dollars. I would just setup a site with some info on colds. Put on some adsense and collect 4 or 5 k per month. Then when a corporate giant see's it you can sell it to them for 5 mil or so.

Vicks owns cough.com..maybe they would be interested in cold.com as well. Great domain. Makes me wish i was older. All of us younger people (and im not even that young but was only 14-15 in 95) missed out on all the great domains at an affordable price. You should count yourself very lucky that you were able to get in on something that will never happen again. If only i was 5 years older i'd be rich.

Questions

All of you have been tremendously helpful - thanks. Questions:

What does "selling domain IMO" mean?
What does "0-NP$" mean, net present value of future traffic?

BTW, 95% of the visitors continue on to cold medicine related topics. I think the rest are looking for some band or something. None were going to A/C or refrigeration when I had it as a link. Also, it was interesting to see that about 20%-30% were heading to holistic remedies.

Does anyone know who decides to buy a domain in a company? Is it the marketing dept or the advertising company or IT?

Thanks again!
Dave

If he wants to sit on it for a while, and does not want the attention, then add privacy. But if actively shopping this, leave it off.
