Hi everyone,

I am watching domain for 8 years. The owner just renew it each year without using it. I tried many brokers to contact him, but all end with no response.

The domain info:

LLLLLLLL.com
Name: REGISTER.COM, INC.
Status: clientHold, clientTransferProhibited
Expires On February 22, 2014
Registered On February 22, 1999
Updated On April 08, 2013

on 8th of April 2013 the status changed to: clientHold, clientTransferProhibited

could you tell me what does that mean? is it going to be dropped soon? already 45 days passed.

I will appreciate sharing your experience with me.

Kind of odd that someone would hang onto a domain that long and not use it for anything or try to sell it...

Status: clientHold, clientTransferProhibited
It just means that the domain is locked from being transferred to another registrar...

Only Registrar has the access to add the restricted status of clientHold.

Thanks all for your responses,

It looks that I have to wait and watch. By the way, can I contact icann for incorrect whois? because all brokers couldn't reach him. Maybe one of the broker report that to icann and the registrar holds the domain until correcting the whois information. I will wait couples of days then I will report that to icann.

If I remember correctly, I believe that means the domain has been suspended by the registrar. The domain cannot be transferred or modified and chances are the domain is not resolving to any website since domains do not resolve when in a suspended state. This could be due to incorrect whois details, failed payment, violation of registrar's TOS, or perhaps some sort of legal dispute having to do with that domain.

No need to report to icann. Nothing further will come of it...

For a 14+ years old domain name, I don't think it would solve your problem by reporting whois inaccuracy to ICANN.

If you really wanna grab the domain name, it's better for you to contact the Registrar and maybe the Registrar would be kind enough and help you contact the real owner/holder.

Moreover, I am still curious about why the Registrar added restricted status of clientHold to the domain name.

Please don't do that.

I once contacted network solutions to ask what their policy was for domains in "client hold". The rep asked for the specific domain and I foolishly told her. 2 backorders were placed on the domain within 30 minutes of that call. Prior to the call, I had the only backorder for a couple months. Weird timing huh :imho:

Contacting the registrar in this situation as you have mentioned would not get the OP very far. If the contact information of the customer is not visible or inaccurate in the whois area, then the specific contact information used to pay for the domain is not going to be disclosed to random people due to privacy concerns. Information also will not be released about why a domain is in ClientHold status. This is all private information that can only be discussed with the customer and not to a 3rd party unless law enforcement is involved. Doing so would most likely be a privacy policy violation in most cases. But as I have already mentioned, ClientHold usually means the domain is in a suspended state which means the customer might have a billing issue that needs to be taken care of, or the customer may have violated the TOS, or there is some sort of legal dispute involved with the domain.

Maybe you are right, but I didn't figure out whether a Registrar with high reputation did do things like that or not, we working as an intermediary help clients buy domain name which was registered with us and make both parties happy in the end. Hope the thread starter would be lucky enough!

I totally agree with you on that privacy should be much valued by all Registrars.

However, the whois is generally public information unless the Registrant used whois privacy service.

If the Registrant/Holder/Owner does mind Registrar's contacting them and asking "Hello Customer, one man is interested in your domain name, if you don't wanna develop the domain name to a website, is it possible for you to sell the domain name to him?", then no more contacts will happen.
