Hello NP-ers,

One of my domains expired on 27/07/2018. And 09/09 will be the last day for me to be able to save the name.

The domain status has been changed to Clienthold but it can still be transfered or renewed in the next 2 days. Which means I will not be able to transfer or renew it after 09/09.

But I transfered the name to another registrar today and process is expected to be completed on 12/09. But the current registrar won't hold the name after 09/09.

So will the transfer be succesful?

Please help me clarify this issue.

Thank you.

Probably not. Many registrars won't allow an expired domain to be transferred at all. For those which do allow it, you should have begun the transfer so that it could be completed within the grace period allowed by the losing registrar.

Which registrar are you transferring it away from?

If transfer is already started by the gaining registrar and it is pending - then it will complete successfully.
Just wait...

+ you may ask the losing registrar to release your domain right now (to avoid ~6 days of waiting)...
If this possibility is not provided by default.

Regarding "clientHold"...
It has no any impact on transfer, this is just to disable DNS.

Their period doesn't matter at all.
Transfer is processed at Registry level.

I'm transfering it away from the registrar Gandi.net.
Thanks to everyone's help, especially @Jurgen Wolf , the domain transfer has just been successful!
Have a nice day guys!

Are you saying Gandi.net lets you renew or even transfer out up to 45 days after expiration without renewing it first or paying a redemption fee? :xf.eek:

Assuming the registrar doesn't freeze the domain past expiry date, then once the transfer is in progress, the domain status changes to "Pending Transfer" which is tantamount to "Renewed", hence it does not go into "Redemption Period" :xf.smile:

It's 42 days, not 45, to Redemption Period, if memory serves...?
In my experience amongst some 20 registrars, most don't block transfers-out initiated past expiry date. This is in accordance with ICANN rules. However, it does matter how many days past expiry date - usually no more than 30 days past expiry, but some ( e.g. Epik) hijack them after only 2 weeks! So it's a good idea to check the small print in their TOS when registering / transfering your domains to a new registrar.

What most registrars do instead to keep your business, is disable domain unlocking and EPP key recovery in their control panel. So it's a good idea to plan ahead and prep your domains for transfer before their expiry dates, then go ahead with transfers at your convenience.

Some registrars (e.g. Epik, Register.it et al) will unlock the domain and send out the EPP key past expiry date, so never hurts to try opening a ticket and asking nicely :xf.wink:

Thank you for your information.
It really helpful. I'm new to this and a bit lack of knowledge.
By the way, among 20 registrars that you mentioned above, can you list out which registrars allow user to transfer out up to 42 days after expiration like Gandy.net?
I think I may need them to have a better plan for my venture. I'm lacking of budget so there'd be some time my domains expire before I have enough money to renew them.
Thank you.

No, I had to pay the renew fee when transfering out the domain.

Sorry, but can't say with certainty, offhand. I make sure to renew on the sunny side of 30 days past expiry (almost always only true for domains I'm on the fence about renewing at all).

In that case, may I suggest a different strategy... keep in mind that you don't have to wait out the year to renew your domains. I save a bundle* renewing, or rather transferring out early, oftentimes many months in advance of expiry, using various promos. Planning ahead always pays dividends, in any business, or hobby, for that matter :cigar:

*) My current renewal cost is $4.50 :xf.grin:

Yes it will. I've done this a lot of times. If the transfer auth has been confirmed and the losing registrar has confirmed the transfer acceptance, then it will transfer! Also, check the whois info status of the domain

Could you please share the details of how you are managing to get $4.50 renewals?
