I do not know the history of the US government acquiring domains. NSA.com is another one that falls under the same umbrella. Really not sure if they hold any .com domains TBH.

I just think in the .com era, if the US government has the ability, and authorization to acquire such a domain, there are reasons such an entity could justify such a purchase. Though, I am by no means qualified to say what is and, what isn't a justifiable purchase.
