I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

No time to check all of them, but I like MM because it may mean 买卖 (buy and sell), 妈妈 (mother), 妹妹 (younger sister), and 美眉 (pretty girl) -- money words.

HSG.net sold for mid 5 figures CNY recently. HSG may mean 红薯干 (dried sweet potato), 会收购 (will buy), and 好时光 (good time). Can be used for food, ecommerce, and entertainment.

eName sharply cut .cc renewal fee from 160 to 22 CNY for renewal done between June 3 and December 31 this year. Well, it looks like the price war is extended to renewal.

I don't see much activities. The problem with mixed language domain names is that it requires switching input method. I like Chinese IDN.IDN better.

21.cn sold for 6m CNY at auction during 2016 Global Domain Industry Summit in China. 21 rhymes with 爱医 (love doctor), 爱意 (love), 爱衣 (love clothes), and 爱一 (love one). Was sold for mid 5 figures in 2009, then 1m in 2013, showing strong performance of 2N domain names.

73.com sold for 13m CNY at auction during 2016 Global Domain Industry Summit in China. 73 rhymes with 情深 (deep love).

HG.com sold for 18m CNY at auction during 2016 Global Domain Industry Summit in China. HG may mean 华贵 (sumptuous), 皇冠 (imperial crown), and 韩国 (Korea). Was sold for 17.88m in September, 2015, so not much change.

Banana.com sold for 22.4m CNY at 2016 Global Domain Industry Summit. Was sold for 13.2m in auction last year. Similar domain names already used by Chinese companies include BananaUmbrella.com, BananaDesign.cn, Android app Banana, and Android app Banana streaming.

DI.com sold for 8m CNY at 2016 Global Domain Industry Summit. DI may mean 帝 (emperor), 迪 (to enlighten), 滴 (a drop), 笛 (flute), and 地 (land).

Wang.com sold for 4.99m CNY at 2016 Global Domain Industry Summit. Wang may mean 旺 (prosperous), 王 (king), and 网 (net).

699.com sold for 5.5m CNY in 2016 Global Domain Industry Summit auction. Compare it with 688.com sold for near 10m last year and you can see a big difference between 9 and 8.

0571.com sold for 3.8m CNY in 2016 Global Domain Industry Summit auction. This is a crazy time. A 4L .com starting with 0 getting about 600k USD?

Thanks. I wonder if all of the sales are legit though. I don't doubt that many are but some of the very high profile sales might not alway be. Research the banana.com story. From what I had read on other blogs it had never sold while it was claimed that it had been sold for $2 million.

@dordomai, Thanks for the links. I'm aware of the banana story. I just report what's in the Chinese domain news, but I'm not in a position to validate the sales. For example the 3.8m CNY sale of 0571.com is hard to believe, but it was reported in Chinese news.

Thanks.I don't know how to value the numerics so I can not comment on this but 22.4 million yuan = $3.4 million for banana.com seems very high considering that it probably didn't sell for $2 million last year and the buyer must have been a speculator.

Not impossibly high but questionably high IMO.

I did a Namebio search on 4N starting with 0. The highest is

0857.com 38,333 USD 2015-11-26

Compare 38k with 0571.com's 580k. That's a big difference. However, I'm aware that there is no true comps in the domain world. If someone wants a domain name, he'll pay a very high price.

That's right . If you your company is 0857.net and you want the 0857.com then you will have to pay whatever the seller wants. 360.com wasn't worth $17 million either but it did still sell for that price.

GG.cn sold for 2.04m CNY in recent auction. GG may mean 故宫 (the Forbidden City), 广告 (advertising), 谷歌 (Google), 哥哥 (elder brother), and 公共 (public).

SS.cn sold for 2m CNY in recent auction. SS may mean 硕士 (Master's degree), 时尚 (fashion), 上市 (to list on stock market), and 胜诉 (win court case).

TT.cn sold for 1.94m CNY in recent auction. TT may mean 天天 (everyday), 谈谈 (discuss), 头条 (headline), 太太 (Mrs.), and 团体 (group).

06.com sold for 6m CNY in recent auction. Was sold for 620k in December, 2010. See the price hike. Compare it with similar past sales: 13.com (rumored to be 8 figures CNY), 52.com (10m), 68.com (10m), and 73.com (13m).
