ccTLD Domain Statistics

I've posted the domain name statistics for 54 ccTLDs over 2008 on www.hosterstats.com/DomainNameCounts2008.php - while it is far from complete, it does cover the statistics of some of the super ccTLDs such as .de, .nl and .cn and .uk. I've also requested some statistics from other registries.

Without domain tasting, .com is being equaled and in some cases eclipsed by the cumulative ccTLD growth. I'm going to do some comparisons of ccTLD growth and gTLD growth.

Right now .tel is shrinking.

You are correct, my bad. And yes, I was sober when I posted that.
The .tel figure has been up and down over the last few weeks due to Enom running a below cost special offer for its resellers. This has boosted .tel figures. However .tel is in the middle of its Junk Dump landrush anniversary when a lot of the highly speculative domains registered during its landrush will be dropped. This typically shrinks a TLD and .tel's overall trend is downwards.

TLD Stats and economics

Here is another List of TLDยดs and theyr current amount of Domains, this time it has been compared to the countries GDP ind GDP/Domain, instead of GDP/Capita. I am missing some important ccTLDs such as Thailand, Egypt, Greece and Nigera so I would appreciate info on those.

Help me understand, how does GDP/Domain provide any useful info?

its something like GDP/Capita, it shows how much of a countries GDP is available per registered domain, this is a very rough method (just as is GDP/capita) but if you look at the list you immediatly see that it makes sense. Montenegro has the lowest value on the list because the TLD is hardly used within the country and has only value looking at the "funny" extension name. On the upper side of the list you will see all the emerging market ranked by how far their TLD has been used and again this makes sense and gives you a look at how emerging these markets are (again without taking into consideration how restrictive registrations are etc.)

HosterStats.com: Domain Name Counts 2010
The .Asia drop from April 2010. What is the future of .Asia & Tel?
What is the reason?
The .asia drop is the echo of last year's Junk Dump/Landrush anniversary. I am not sure how low the .asia sTLD will go in the next few months but it may stabilise around 175K.

The .Tel drop from April 2010.
The .tel has been in its Junk Dump/Landrush anniversary since March 2010 and its figures have been unstable. There is an eNom reseller offer running at the moment that is selling .tel domains below cost so that has hidden the real effect of the Junk Dump.

that sheet shows india as having 510K domains. .IN passed the 600K mark a month or 2 ago, so that # is off by almost 100K..

I agree, I will review the data in some weeks, however, that would not make much different to the general conclusion of the study.

jmcc,

Why are there two different tables like end of month and start of month?

Why not put them together and have one simple table?

31 Jan and 1 Feb are not too far away. You could simply put them all under 1 Feb.

I want to see a sortable table where I can click on the table headers and sort.

It is a shame so much work has been wasted creating the tables in such a way where you can't compare the numbers.

Edit:
This is what I want to see:

I do this with the spreadsheet reports but the stats page is based on the way that the registries report their numbers. I'm not sure about a sortable table (I remember reading how it could be done in PHP PEAR) but I will put a single table page up next week.

I've asked but the registry never provided any statistics. I'll ask again. :)

jmcc,
Half of them are reporting their numbers on let's say 31 October and the other half on 1 November. What you do it you just create two different tables for them.

What I'm saying is, this is the wrong thing to do. You should put this data together on one table. Just assume the 31 October as 1 November as well.

Why don't you put the data together and make it more useful? I was so annoyed by that I just closed the page. I'm even thinking to do this myself if you can't do it.

In the domain business, days matter. Some registries do mass deletions on the last day of each month so mixing the two without explanation could given an inaccurate image of the situation.

Well the most of the data (the gTLD figures) in the start of the month table is generated from actually crunching the zone files.

I for one am very grateful for your efforts JMCC. Hosterstats is one of the most useful data sources for domains that I know of.

Do not let negativity get you down, some people are just never grateful for your effort even if you give it to them for free.

Erdinc you should work on your way of giving critique. I see a lot of useful advice from you but many times your aggressive form negates any value by said advice. People will not listen when you spit them in the face.

The OP did a great job collecting and generating all this data. However it is a shame it is presented in two different tables which is unnecessary. There is no need to be caring so much about the details like tasting, when there are much bigger issues like the data being not updated for months for some TLD's.

All I want to see is a list that shows what TLD is bigger than others and you are so close to but you still don't show this date. I had to copy, paste and clean the data in excel in order to see an ordered single list.

For instance the .de domains are now more then the .net domains. That's something very exciting. However all these nice details are missed with poor presentation.

Anyway, good luck with the site.

Thanks. I'm in the middle of the monthly updates and brand protection crunch at the moment.

It is not only domainers that use the site and some of the registries do not publish monthly figures or even regular figures.

The comment about poor presentation is legitimate criticism. However I don't scale horizontally so it takes some time to add features. HosterStats is actually just me. I designed it, I programmed it and I built it.

Anyway, good luck with the site.
Thanks.

On Domainsindex.com there is a reting of TLDs which has similiar numbers, but is a little easier to use and has more ways to sort the data, this is teh link:

Another great site. This one I did not know of. Never saw anyone attempt to fix an index value to a specific TLD. Very daring and innovative. Though some of the index values seem a little off to me.

Why is the .de index value lower than .at for example. That has to be wrong. Still very interesting.. More green rep :)
