I recently acquired a pre-order domain for around ~$100 and now the old owner has contacted me that he had some problem with his auto-renewal and now wants to buy the domain back

what should be the reasonable price that I should quote him ? the domain is not very special and just has a small amount of traffic and is a 8 year old .com

Personally I would say you do not owe this person anything, you did pay for the domain fair and square so why should you now simply hand it over?

Whatever price you think is right should be okay.

If he really did want the domain the "auto renew" would not have been an issue. Registrars contact people months before a domain is about to expire so what really was the reason to let it drop?

Some people may think I am being harsh here but the domain was sent to auction, you were bidding for it along with others...would you feel compelled to hand it over to a rival for what you paid for it simply because they want it?

I would say this person needs to move on, he has lost it and learnt a valuable lesson.

How good is the domain?

dont give it to him for any cheaper than you would for anyone else who would contact you wanting to buy it.

Ask him very high.... He may want that domain.

the domain is not good and in a very limited niche and is related to some old family business however the name is generic, I just grabbed it because it had some traffic and I thought that I can build a website on its topic

A real job maybe get you ยฃ500 a week, so ask for that...
If it is not worth that much, and you are not going to do anything with it, ยฃ100 would get you a night out, plus what you paid for the name.

I had similar experience... this guy dropped it after owning it for 5-6 years with a developed website....then he approaches me with offer of $30. :)

I had this similar case once. Since the domain was bought at TDNAM closeouts and it was nothing to me but an aged dotcom I sold it for the price of a GoDaddy redemption fee.

I would probably go for $150. It isn't much above what you paid, but you can sleep well knowing that you didn't make a killing off it. Plus, it isn't a nice keyword domain/high traffic site so you know his story might be true.

quote 500$ and may be you can finish in 300+ range if you are ok with the price :) as you are telling niche is limited it may be better to make some quick bucks if not developing now

Well I think the best way to get the highest price in this case is to ask the buyer to make his offer. So you will find out how serious he is in his wishes to return the domain name. May be he will offer $1,xxx or more and you thought about just $300... So give him the opportunity to make the first move.
