domain Car-Quotes.com - A HUGE buy for me.

.com - A HUGE buy for me.

I've noticed domains with "-" in them are increasing in value, so I looked for a good combo. I found Cauotes.com, contacted the buyer, and bought the domain for $725. I have just paid 10 minutes ago, and the domain will be transfered to my name.net account in the next 48 hours.

It is the largest domain I have ever bought (I'm still a domain nooby), and I want to ask you - did I make a good choice? It was a spur of the moment decision, and those have always worked out bad for me. Anyway, here are my reasons for buying:

Overture for "cauotes" = 959343
Overture for "carqu.com" = 523
Type-In visits per month - They couldn't tell me but estimate around 1000-2000 hits a month based on the overtures.
Using online Car quotes is increasling becoming "the way" to buy a car (like expedia/orbitz is for hotels)

What is it worth? Any better Type-in guesses? (Did I make a stupid decision?)Thanks so much!

Hm, I don't think you did, sorry. Maybe if you plan on developing then it's a good choice. But not for resale. CarQuotes.com for $725 would be the good buy, not this one.

Actually I bought it as a long term investment... Keeping it a while and making money off of maybe an affiliate program or parking page, and maybe to try to sell it on sedo. I'm sort of counting on a decent amount of type-in traffic over 4-5 years or longer until a nice offer comes along.

not a great buy - not terrible - but hyphen domains can usually be picked up for $200 or so...

Occassionaly a big one will sell for much more --- but I don't think Car-Quotes.com is of that caliber.

I wouldn't be so quick to shoot down the possibility of making a profit on that name. As pointed it, the phrase has very high OVT, and CarQuotes.com with that OVT w/ Ext and w/o ext would be a low $xx,xxx name at least IMO. Also, given the kinds of hyphen sales I've seen recently (thank you memory, no specific ones are coming to mind ), I think you certainly have a chance of selling for low $x,xxx, like $1,000 to $2,000. I wouldn't expect any more than that, but hey, if you sell for double what you paid for it, that's solid profit. Nothing wrong with that! Good luck!

Well I think you could make at least over $1000 by selling the domain, and probably a lot more through adsense revenue if you develop a little website around it and/or increase the PR.

A good long-term investment and I'm sure it will pay off in the long run. But on a short term you can hope that CarQuotes.com grows and grows so that your domain receives type-in traffic which will increase your domains value.

I've been looking at Affiliate sites and I'm feeling a bit more confident about my buy (even though most of you arn't ;p).

All the CJ.com advertisers will give $1.50 or more per lead (if my visitors fill out a whole quote form). This is perfect for my domain, because all of the type-in traffic will be wanting a quote. I have also created a awesome design that blended in a cars.com quote finder ad (which asks for your model, year, and zip) which is placed so well it looks like my own search, and almost all visitors will end up using it.

Assuming I get 1000 hits a month (and I do expect more), and only 5% end up filling out a full quote, that's $75 a month.

Now all I have to do is wait until I have control.

It was a good buy. .

Hey Fem,
You can at least double your money with the site more so than just the name. Heck I just sold a site to a company for $1500 that I made with a drag and drop program. I had to put some time and energy into the affiliate links and it was generating cash so I know it can be done. The key will be advertising it and great SEO to drive SE traffic b/c I don't think you'll get much type-in traffic.

Affiliate would definitely be the best... Until you make atleast half of what you paid back, and if you feel you want to sell, sell.. probably low-mid $xxx, and if you develop more!
