This February, what I suspect was a virus infected my computer, which was Windows XP Media Center edition.
Some people may remember my thread about my computer was crashing and it was thought to be a RAM problem. Well, this was the same computer but a different problem. The problem with the crashing was caused by too much dust within the fan, causing the computer to almost go up to 212 degrees Fahrenheit (almost 100 degrees Celsius). Blowing the fan out resolved this problem.
A few weeks later, the computer started slowing down, and it was very strange. This virus (or what I think is one) shut some things down on Norton Antivirus, and when I tried reactivating the features, they didn't work. I did a lot of things it told me to do to fix it (which I don't remember, but I tried redownloading it from the official Symantec website, but that didn't work either.
Here are some other effects:
-Slows down computer
-Stops printing
-Freezes computer
-Won't let you use System Restore points.
-When you shut your computer down, it freezes at the very end before it completely shuts down.
-Won't let you completely remove programs or re-install them (I think?)
The thing that absolutely destroyed my computer was when I tried using a non-destructive system restore... But then the BSoDs started.
Then since nothing could be done, I did the destructive system restore using the disks, but then when everything re-installed, it failed to make the user partition...
I tried installing the home edition of Windows XP. That almost worked, but never completely set up and the BSoDs started again....
That was when I realized the hard disk was destroyed...
Any ideas on what may have caused this?
