Can I resell a domain within 90 days of buying it?

I bought a few domains about a month ago. A friend suggested I contacted a local company to see if they were interested in one of the domains. They e-mailed me back and told me they would give me a few hundred dollars which I think is reasonable.

My question is how do I sell/transfer a domain? Can I even sell it right now? Someone told me that domains are "locked" for 90 days after you buy them. Is this right?

Also i'm with 1&1 and the company is with GoDaddy. Can I transfer the domain from 1&1 to GoDaddy or does the buyer need to setup a 1&1 account?

Sorry if these questions seem dumb but i'm new to all this.

I think you have to hold onto the domain for a period of 60 days after which you can transfer the domain.

Check with GD and 1&1 to see their transfer policy and rates (if any), it might be easier for the company to set up a free account with your registrar instead.

You can transfer from 1and1 to GoDaddy, when I sold my first site, that is what happened. Just make sure you turn off Private Registration why ahead of time, or the transfer will fail.

Its always easier to push a domain within the same registrar so I ask people to get an account where the domain im selling is registered.

The 60 day restriction is applicable registrar changes, like moving the domain from 1&1 to GoDaddy, this cannot be done within 60 days of the initial registrar. This does not prohibit ownership changes.

You could sell a domain at any time, even within minutes of registering it, if you had a willing buyer. The ownership change is done at the registrar the domain is registered with so yes, the buyer would have the domain moved into his new 1&1 account.

If GoDaddy was their preferred registrar then they could transfer it there at a later date.

Yes, you can push domains from user to user at most registrars withing minutes of registering it. Some registrars do not offer this service however, so make sure you know before you register a domain there.

So to answer your question, yes, you can resell domains within 90 days of purchasing. Or you could do my personal favorite: Sell a domain before you buy it. :p

A little side advice, I have had a bad experience with 1&1 and the deal fell apart because of their idiotic business model.

I don't think many people have accounts at 1&1 but they do at godaddy. So, if you register domains at godaddy you can easily push to a godaddy customer AND accept the transfer the domain can transfer the same day.

Can you push a name from a godaddy reseller like wildwestdomains.com to a godaddy account or is that considered a transfer?

I've only ever done that once.

And it was basically because this huge company with 300 employees had never heard of TLDs aside from .com AND they were real shits, cut off 25% off a print order bill or refused to pay

I've heard that 1&1 has a nominal charge to initiate an account change even within the registrar (which is not standard across the industry). :td:

If you want to move the domains from 1&1 to a different registrar completely such as Go Daddy, you need to wait out 60 day period (it isn't 90 days).

1. Inform buyer you accept offer and domain will be available on 'x' date (60 days after you registered it).
2. Before transfer get payment from buyer and confirm reciept of funds (paypal is good).
3. On the transfer date unlock the domain at 1&1 and get the 'transfer authorization code', give this to buyer.
4. Inform buyer domain is ready to transfer, he initiates transfer at GoDaddy thru his acc't at godaddy.
5. As owner of the name you will receive a 'authorization' email from Godaddy, you forward this email and link to the buyer.
6. He clicks on link and completes the transfer.
