So let's say I find a short brandable .com available for reg fee.
But another TLD or more than one if that domain are taken.
Would this bring the value down?

Let me illustrate if I wasn't clear enough:
I find something like ... kankan.com (just a random example)
but kankan.net is taken.

Would I have less of a chance selling kankan.com because someone else owns kankan.net?

i wouldn't think so, as long as i have the .com i am in first place.

Would you contact the owner of the other TLD to see if they'd like to buy the .com?

I'd be wondering why they don't have the .com .... (maybe they accidentally let it drop? OR it was taken so they went with .net)

depends on the other site and how big the other co is

You should first check for trademark issues.

In general, owning a .com when plenty of other extentions are taken is a favorable situation.

However, in your case (established .net site AND meaningless or semi-meaningless domain name), I think the value of the .com is reduced. Personally, I wouldn't like to start a business called kankan.com if kankan.net is an extablished site.

those are also good points to consider

I've seen some instances where the .net is more established, and the .com is nothing but a parked page and gets quite a bit of residual traffic.
