Buying Expiring Domains For Traffic?

Hi,

I wanted to try to buy an expiring domain related to one of my websites, and then redirect traffic coming in from the expired domain to my website.

I took a look at some of the expiring domains listed on the GoDaddy auction site, and any site that has good traffic is over $40K. I didn't think these type of domains would cost so much.

Is it possible to buy cheaper expiring domain names with traffic?

Has anyone ever tried this, and had good results from traffic of the expiring domain?

Thank you!

It really is dependent on the domain. A 40K domain is probably not being sold just for the traffic, it's either a very decent domain or an overpriced listing.

Many people going to a domain expecting something that is no longer there, will likely move on, unless your own site is compelling enough to make them stay.

If you are really looking to grow your website, I'd personally spend the money on improving it, buying your own ads, etc. instead of buying domains for the expired traffic that may not necessarily convert to regular visitors for your existing site.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Yes, I agree with you...I was just exploring new ideas but the results might not be as good as it sounds in my head! :)

I agree as well. The days of type-in traffic are long gone unless the domain you were intending to purchase was a developed website before.

yesterday i accidentally typed-in webmastertools.com into address bar (and got to a parked domain), when I meant to google for "webmaster tools".

@kristiws: Type-in traffic has usually nothing to do whether domain was developed or not.
