I registered a domain before that expired and had a PR 3 but after a few days the PR disappeared.

I keep seeing domains here offered with PR. What guarantee do I have that if I buy it the domain will keep its PR? (assuming of course I develop it and the inbound links stay)

There is no guarantee it will keep its PR. If it gets parked, the PR will go down faster. At the same you can fo from PR1 to PR3 in a mater of less than a month. Develop a good site that is bot friendly and you should not have a problem keeping or increasing the PR. Before buying, make sure it does not have a fake PR. At the top of namepros, click on Domain Services, and you will see a fake PR checker.

Thanks for the info. I often wonder what the whole PR hype is about. So many times I find a website with SEPR #1 and PR0.

How is that possible?

I highly doubt of that :)

even if the domain loses the PR, it still may have the old traffic to your site.
You may gain back the PR easier since you may not have the sandbox;
