Buying a domain based on GoDaddy Traffic stats

Hello All,

I have found a domain that I'm interested in based solely on it's traffic stats that Godaddy Auctions provide.

How accurate is this data likely to be, it says it gets 202,000 hits a month under their "estimated stats".

If a domain did get this amount of traffic:

  • How much is it worth?
  • Is Godaddy's estimated traffic to be trusted?

Thanks for your consideration,

Luke :ghost:

Hi Makis,

What you say makes a lot of sense. I have looked at the article and I also found that interesting so thank you!

As I happens, this domain is an Expiring domain. I contacted the owner asking them if they wanted to sell it as they were letting it expire.

Within an hour of contacting the owner, the domain had been renewed for another year and we had begun negotiations.

The price that has been asked is $500 USD, which to me for that kind of traffic is more than a good price!..... however I don't want to get hold of it to find that there is no traffic.

Kind Regards,

Luke

counter the price and ask for traffic stats, previous history of the domain etc

don't counter before getting traffic stats...

Yes, and make sure you undersand that the traffic the domain is getting may or may not continue once the content of the site it displays changes. In the stats, make sure they show you where the traffic is coming from, the page urls that are being requested, and any search queries.

If the traffic is all from China looking for chopstick holders, it may not be worth $500... :)

What does Google Adwords Tool say the traffic is? Does it have any backlinks?

I bought a name at Godaddy auctions and it said around 10K uniques per month, and the moment I took possession of the name, the traffic disappeared. I am wondering if it's possible to sell a name there, and the day before you start your auction you divert good traffic to the name your selling to bolster the uniques, and then pull the plug on the unsuspecting buyer when the auction ends.

I wonder if that's what happened to me, because you can't see where the actual traffic is coming from, and you don't know if 10K traffic is 9,900 from a site being forwarded, and 100 that you're really going to end up with after the auction.

Be careful anywhere with traffic names, it gets real frustrating when you spend close to a grand, and find out you bought garbage. But the other side of the coin is, when you hit a good one, there is no better feeling than spending a grand and watching $7 a day come in.

Just like everyone says here, find out where the traffic is coming from, this is the safest way to protect yourself.

Good luck,

was it a good domain to start with?
Maybe it was worth letting it expire then turning around and hand-regging it?

You do realize that contacting them before it expired was probably the worst idea you could do. For all you know, they forgot about it and you reminded them. Now they have you right where they want ya!

$500 for 202,000 visits a month is a pretty good deal imo.

With immediate dev and ad placement, you can make all that money back in no time (Less than a month).
