This 850 year French structure is on the verge of a major collapse because of fire. So so sad

I can't wait to find out who is responsible for this terrible terrible event.

Very very sad... and on top of it, just a few days before Easter and the fire apparently started late in the afternoon...

I visited this magnificent cathedral in the year 2000.

There weren’t many precautions that could be in place, given the nature of the building. Old wood, all that open space (feeds a fire plenty of oxygen and nothing structurally there to contain it from spreading). All it would have taken was one spark from a tool or generator, maybe unnoticed at first. That fire would have burned VERY hot and spread quickly. The height and structure hampered their ability to get water to the top of the building.
(Btw dumping water from planes would have collapsed the entire structure, as well as surrounding buildings)
A lot of the art and artifacts had been removed previously because of the construction and are safe. Firefighters saved some other items.
The rose windows were a huge loss- one of the buildings oldest and most remarkable features, and the process for making them has been lost over time so no way to truly replicate them. I think the north one may have survived. I saw one report that the south one did too, but reports yesterday that smaller ones at the top of the building were lost.
Sad that it was a beautiful piece of art / architecture and of historical significance, but the building was damaged or changed every century of its existence. They will rebuild.

The fire has destroyed the main spire and almost all the roof. The main spire and roof are wood structures. If you've ever been inside all you see is polished wood, So it's easy to imagine all the internal wood layering has also gone, this would include all the valuable and historic mounted artwork. The outer structure is stone and any damage will be be repairable. This isn't going to be deliberate act, the fire clearly started at the roof level and burnt across and down into the main structure. Even the two bell towers (that appear untouched) are all wood beams internally, apart from the stone staircase.

This was a workmans error or electrical short. With the wood roofing covered by external lead and metal sheeting, the fire could have been burning without anyone working from the scaffolding being even aware of it until it was too late. They were still working while in daylight

I have no-doubt the French will rebuild though with probably far less wood in the internal structure. It is just ironic that the public funds raised to renovate the crumbling stonework is the only bits still standing, all the structure not requiring renovation has gone

They were torched off -- you can see the torch burns.

The official explanation is that removing the heads made them easier to transport.

It is a little bizarre.

I think the French people are beginning to lose their heads over the amount of Churches, Christian or Religious statues that are being set on fire or vandalized or desecrated... an average of 2-3 a day in France, which the Liberal Media won't talk about.
Just last year 875 churches in France have been set on fire and feces smeared on walls as the country’s Christian heritage is said to be under attack from mostly one section of the population.

Very recent, among dozens of incidents, include a fire in Saint-Sulpice church in Paris and human feces daubed on a wall in Notre-Dame-des-Enfacts Cathedral in Nimes.

French police said the fire at Saint-Sulpice about 4 weeks ago, had been started deliberately. This Cathedral is only slightly smaller than Notre Dame and therefore the 2nd biggest in Paris (below)

The Saint-Denis Basilica outside Paris had serious damage done to the main organ, as well as smashed stained glass windows, done by a very recently arrived Pakistani migrant....

The walls and all the steel scaffolding, (and walkway) forming that large square in the middle of the pic. Its sad to know if they hadn't been up there it wouldn't have happened. I'm sure it was only recently erected. I doubt many of the workmen are sleeping tonight. The big questions are going to be focused on what fire-safety precautions were in place, given that it was such an old wooden constructed roof

Going to disagree here. There is an abundance of options to help mitigate, especially knowing the wood was old. As an example, using air powered tools vs. electric tools. Another example would be to have full time staff observing with fire retardant. The list of mitigating factors can go on and on. Truly a sad situation.

Anyhow : I looked some days ago to a discussion on French television where there was a visitor, the architect during
2000-2010 (or was it 2013). He had just had a call that the fire started NOT on a place where workers were busy. Something he heard on the phone with the current overseeing architect..
Anyhow : A major expert said that all options are open of how it was caused.

There was a first alarm, but they didn't see anything, and after the 2nd alarm they finally saw flames, and it went quick.

Sadly that there were no sprinklers and inside there were no water supplies, where pomps could be used.
(as is the case in f.i. the cathedral of Antwerp).
Anyhow : There were always 2 firefighter downstairs, I think 24/7, as I heard on television.

ABOUT THE MONEY : Something very strange is the case with the taxlaws in France : 60% of the gifts are taxdeductable.
This means that the 60% of those 800 million Euro of donations; will have to be payed by .... the French citizens.
But the French president and the government will make special laws for this. Anyhow : 1 day later after these anouncements : 1 of the big givers, said he didn't want the 60% taxdeduction.

Also from Disney there came 5 million dollars. A bit low, according to several French people, considering that the animationmovie "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (i think based on a book of Victor Hugo), had a profit/gained 300 million dollars.

Of course churches are things made in the material world. The spiritual message of Jesus Christ is much more important IMO.

Here 2 videos of the animation movie of Hunchback of Notre Dame (some 2-3 minutes) where the cathedral is the living place of Quasimodo, the hunchback, and you see Esmeralda -the gypsy lady- singing ( "God help the outcasts" ) in the cathedral, and you can see 1 of the colourglasswindows near to the end very well and during the video some statues from in the cathedral.

Could be. Trump's friend, Steve Bannon just went to war with the Pope, so maybe someone thought it would be their own way of hurting "the church" by doing it. Sometimes people will do anything, with what they have access to, in order to make a statement.

But an investigation will likely show what really was the cause. Odd that it happened so late in the day.
