news Burning of Notre Dame Cathedral

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
This 850 year French structure is on the verge of a major collapse because of fire. So so sad :(

I can't wait to find out who is responsible for this terrible terrible event.

Probably not arson. More likely related to renovation, but still very sad to see.

Yes, very sad - The church was under restoration so probably an accident related to it

IMO I dont think it was an accident. I think it was deliberate, considering the timing of this (easter season) makes it a real possibility to be a political statement. We will see

I´m not so much into conspiracy theories, but we will see

Everything gets burnt, buried, or paved over.

No worries, they will build it up to 2023 code and dump millions into its restoration.

Meanwhile there are still starving kids all over the globe.

Cheers.

Could be. Trump's friend, Steve Bannon just went to war with the Pope, so maybe someone thought it would be their own way of hurting "the church" by doing it. Sometimes people will do anything, with what they have access to, in order to make a statement.

But an investigation will likely show what really was the cause. Odd that it happened so late in the day.

The fire has destroyed the main spire and almost all the roof. The main spire and roof are wood structures. If you've ever been inside all you see is polished wood, So it's easy to imagine all the internal wood layering has also gone, this would include all the valuable and historic mounted artwork. The outer structure is stone and any damage will be be repairable. This isn't going to be deliberate act, the fire clearly started at the roof level and burnt across and down into the main structure. Even the two bell towers (that appear untouched) are all wood beams internally, apart from the stone staircase.

This was a workmans error or electrical short. With the wood roofing covered by external lead and metal sheeting, the fire could have been burning without anyone working from the scaffolding being even aware of it until it was too late. They were still working while in daylight

I have no-doubt the French will rebuild though with probably far less wood in the internal structure. It is just ironic that the public funds raised to renovate the crumbling stonework is the only bits still standing, all the structure not requiring renovation has gone

Why wasn't the fire put out on time? Is the fire service in France really that poor? I don't want to blame anyone for this but I think the fire service should have done more

It pains me to share a pic posted by @GILSAN in another thread.
Sadly the only thing standing is it's walls.

The walls and all the steel scaffolding, (and walkway) forming that large square in the middle of the pic. Its sad to know if they hadn't been up there it wouldn't have happened. I'm sure it was only recently erected. I doubt many of the workmen are sleeping tonight. The big questions are going to be focused on what fire-safety precautions were in place, given that it was such an old wooden constructed roof

A jewel of world heritage with centuries of history, burned in a couple of hours... It survived wars, plagues and the elements for 856 years. Today we have lost not only a piece of France's architecture but a piece of world history.

There weren’t many precautions that could be in place, given the nature of the building. Old wood, all that open space (feeds a fire plenty of oxygen and nothing structurally there to contain it from spreading). All it would have taken was one spark from a tool or generator, maybe unnoticed at first. That fire would have burned VERY hot and spread quickly. The height and structure hampered their ability to get water to the top of the building.
(Btw dumping water from planes would have collapsed the entire structure, as well as surrounding buildings)
A lot of the art and artifacts had been removed previously because of the construction and are safe. Firefighters saved some other items.
The rose windows were a huge loss- one of the buildings oldest and most remarkable features, and the process for making them has been lost over time so no way to truly replicate them. I think the north one may have survived. I saw one report that the south one did too, but reports yesterday that smaller ones at the top of the building were lost.
Sad that it was a beautiful piece of art / architecture and of historical significance, but the building was damaged or changed every century of its existence. They will rebuild.

Going to disagree here. There is an abundance of options to help mitigate, especially knowing the wood was old. As an example, using air powered tools vs. electric tools. Another example would be to have full time staff observing with fire retardant. The list of mitigating factors can go on and on. Truly a sad situation.

Who Owns France.com?
by RALF MICHAELS on MAY 2, 2018

France is a state. France.com, by contrast, is a domain name, and it was, until recently, owned not by the French state but instead by a Californian company, France.com, Inc. That conflict is now being litigated in a fascinating dispute reminiscent of the early days of the internet.

In those early days, in 1994 to be precise, a French-born individual living in the United States, Jean-Noël Frydman, registered the domain name France.com. The domain name is now held by a Californian company, France.com Inc, which Frydman set up. The website, at first dedicated to general information for Francophiles around the world, was later expanded to operate as a travel site.

But France.com, Inc, did not, it appears, own trademarks in Europe. This enabled a Dutch company, Traveland Resorts, to register French and European word and graphic marks for France.com in 2010. In 2014, France.com, Inc brought suit in France against Traveland for fraudulent filings of trademarks and achieved a settlement under which Traveland transferred the trademarks.

Anyone figure out why the apostles got their heads chopped off a few days before?

They were torched off -- you can see the torch burns.

The official explanation is that removing the heads made them easier to transport.

It is a little bizarre.
I think the French people are beginning to lose their heads over the amount of Churches, Christian or Religious statues that are being set on fire or vandalized or desecrated... an average of 2-3 a day in France, which the Liberal Media won't talk about.
Just last year 875 churches in France have been set on fire and feces smeared on walls as the country’s Christian heritage is said to be under attack from mostly one section of the population.

Very recent, among dozens of incidents, include a fire in Saint-Sulpice church in Paris and human feces daubed on a wall in Notre-Dame-des-Enfacts Cathedral in Nimes.

French police said the fire at Saint-Sulpice about 4 weeks ago, had been started deliberately. This Cathedral is only slightly smaller than Notre Dame and therefore the 2nd biggest in Paris (below)

The Saint-Denis Basilica outside Paris had serious damage done to the main organ, as well as smashed stained glass windows, done by a very recently arrived Pakistani migrant....

Pakistani Migrant Faces Trial for Smashing Historic Church Holding Tombs of French Kings
A 41-year-old Pakistani migrant will face trial after vandalizing the Saint-Denis Basilica, the home of the tombs of many French Kings including Charles Martel.

The Pakistani origin male, who had arrived in France only two months ago, will stand trial in Bobigny next month, accused of causing serious damage to the main organ of the basilica as well as smashing stained glass windows in an apparent attack that took place in March, Le Parisien reports.
