I thought I should let everyone know that a domain name was taken from my GoDaddy account today, by GoDaddy. The domain was fully in my account and I still have the transfer confirmation from GoDaddy.

What tipped me off is that earlier today, they simply sent me an email saying that "I" cancelled the domain registration. I knew I had not, so I called. After a long hold while they "researched", they explained that the domain was a stolen domain and that they repossessed it.

GoDaddy provided little additional information. The rep did say that the domain would be returned to it's rightful owner or if not, be sold at some point (can you believe that).

I am shocked that this happened. The domain is gxog (dot) com. I bought it here on NP a few days ago. I paid for it on Dan.com (Undeveloped), and the seller was @proton1 .

I have reached out to the seller but haven't heard back yet. The seller is currently selling another 4L domain here. @Eric Lyon , you might want to take a look.

Anyway, hopefully I will recover the funds from Dan.com or Paypal.

@Joe Styler if there is anything you can do to help or take a look, it would be great.

I don't know how GoDaddy was the registrar, then all of a sudden decided to repossess the domain I just bought. Then refer me back to Dan.com. All with no real explanation.

I look at it like a big bag of delicious popcorn. One bad kernel isn't going to ruin my enjoyment.

Just wish GD had been more open, professional and understanding.
I am sorry to hear this happened to you. The legal department is the one who repossesses the domains in most cases. They do not call people. They want everything in writing. There are a few reasons they would repossess the domain name. The most probable is that the domain was not paid for originally. I dont want to detail the scam here and let others in on the way to do it. I'll pm you more of an explanation. The other things that could trigger this is a court or other body with legal jurisdiction that orders the domain be moved.

Even if details could not be given to the person who had the domain taken away, it seems to me @Joe Styler that a clear notification that at the very least gives the category of the situation is owed to the person who held it, @Silentptnr in this case. It is good that now you are privately telling him, but it should be done automatically.

That is, saying something like the following (based on your possibilities) should be given to the domain holder who has now lost it at the time it was taken and automatically:
  • "The domain name had to be removed from your account since we were given a court order requiring us to move the domain name." or
  • "This domain name was not paid for on a previous transaction at GoDaddy and therefore we believe it is our right to recover the domain name."
  • etc.
As part of due process the owner has a right to know the situation so they can decide if there is a reason to appeal it or consider legal or consumer action. By simply saying it was removed from your account, there is zero transparency.

Just my opinion. I really hope you get compensated in some way, @Silentptnr.

Bob

Some things are bigger than all of us.
Anything involving legal usually means silence, unless pressed they will say as little as possible.

GD is "reposessing" names because previous owner owes them money, nothing else. Nothing to do with stolen domain or any "legal" issue. They are in charge of this. Judge, jury and executioner.
It has already been discussed on NP - they are taking domains from new owner's account because of THEIR problems with other client past payment. Been there, nightmare.

Yes, now that you mention it, I do remember another thread that discussed how GoDaddy is not properly collecting payments or something of that nature.

Yes, chargebacks and other fraud from previous owner, but this is not the way to deal with it. Highly unethical at the very least.
