Billionaire At Age 23, Not Because Of Domains But Because Of Site Development, Etc.

He is speculated to be worth 3 Billion US Dollars.

The Face Behind Facebook
Meet Mark Zuckerberg, the 23-year-old Harvard dropout behind the Internet phenomenon Facebook. Since Facebook's creation four years ago, some 60 million people have already signed up, and that number is expected to grow to 200 million by the end of 2008. Lesley Stahl has the story.

The cool thing is he is still living in a one bedroom apartment.

Please share your thoughts here.

Righto, I saw the piece on 60 Minutes™ last night ... pretty cool stuff! :lala:

Definitely still a geeky kid though, but LOTS of upside for both he and Facebook! :tu:
Interesting about targeted advertisements and best monetizing the site, particularly IMHO.

I strongly dislike what he has done with Facebook recently with the open application platform. Sure, it brings in a lot of traffic, but it panders to the hyperactive kids coming from MySpace. I liked the clean and slim Facebook that existed before...

My 2 cents. ;)

I have to agree

Yeah, your opinions just count for so much.. This isn't even news, no one follows what happens online?

I doubt he is worth 3bil. On 60 minutes they said he was only making little money because he couldnt find a good way to monetize the site. And when google offered him 1bil for facebook he declined. Sounds odd.

agreed, he has 250 million from the deal with microsoft not including the 150 million a year he makes with microsoft ads. Hes not worth 3 billion, and probably won't be in the near future. At least not with this kind of social network.

Agreed. He should have taken the 1 billion from Google :)

I beleave yahoo offered 1 billion as well, then made a second offer of 750 million.. Imagine that kind of cut, honestly I can understand that some people don't think money is everything.. but man, for something you made out of your dorm room in collage (lets face it, its not the difficult to code if your programmer) I would have taken that one billion and ran. :)

Isnt he the one who stole the idea from the other companies? I was under the impression that facebook wasnt really his idea.

No real proof, I'm pretty shore that the case was dismissed. Regardless, the idea has been floating around for some time.

Look at classmates.com + myspace.com = facebook.com :)

Even if he did happen to come across the idea by some one else, can we blame him? He did make it succesfull did he not?

$1 Billion, I would've taken it in a second. Imaging what you could do with that sort of money? You could buy all the great domains with that money. They would've probably paid him in Google shares or most of it in shares, but still, that's great!

This was exactly my thought. Until...

Install "Stylish" as a Firefox addon and then write the following code in the application:

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain("facebook.com") {
div.profile_box { display: none !important; }
#box_app_2327158227.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* information
*/
#box_app_2297529396.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* education
and work */
#box_app_2356318349.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* network
friends */
#box_app_2503140832.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* friends,
other networks */
#box_app_2407511955.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* mutual
friends */
#box_app_2361831622.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* groups */
#box_app_2305272732.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* photos */
#box_app_2347471856.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* notes */
#box_app_2309869772.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* posted
items */
#box_app_2719290516.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* the wall */
#box_app_2341989679.profile_box { display: block !important; } /* mini-feed
*/
}

Means you hide all the applications.

Retire at the age of 34, that is what I would do. LOL. Buying domain names or working, for that matter would be the last thing on my mind. I would take a permamnent vacation...and buy a couple yachts.. :hehe:

Yeah, but what has he done today?

Heh, j/k of course, great story!

I like hearing these sort of success stories but I'm over this facebook guy, this story has been recycled about a thousand times, I first seen it on our tv here about 1 year ago. It would be great to hear about less known website pioneers who have made even just 1 million. it seems like no one is interested in any one who doesn't make a billion these days.

Yeah, I'd take a permanent vacation all around the world as well, but I wouldn't stop domaining. It'd be more of a buy & hold. I would still get my money to work for me.
