I am wondering the rules regarding this symbol and does it effect titles and text on a website ? Bikinis | Swimwear or Binkins Swimwear in title or tagline

Also i recently read hot-bikinis (the -) would council out the word behind the hyphen ? so it would only read hot

Is there any penalty for using ~ between words

I wonder if there are any other text rules out there us budding bloggers should know about ?

Just noticed your post -- and that no one had responded -- so I'll throw out my 2 cents...

I'm pretty sure (meaning almost 100,000,000% positive) in most instances punctuation and characters are generally ignored by the search engines.

The minus sign only negates a word if it is used in an actual search query that you put in to a search engines search box.

i.e. Using, "bathing suit -bikini", as your search string on Google would/should give you search results for all pages that contain "bathing suit" except those that also contain "bikini".

Using a minus sign within your site will NOT hide words from the SE's nor reduce your ranking for those words that it may precede.

By the way, I think the "|" symbol is often referred to as a "Pipe".

I use ALL three symbols you asked about, plus many more, and I have some of the top ranked sites in my niches on Google & Yahoo/Bing.
