Hi all,

Just wanted to warn everyone of a PayPal scam email being circulated. I got one this morning.

This is what it says:

"Warning Notification Dear" valued PayPal® member:

It has come to our attention that your PayPal® account information needs to be updated as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and to reduce the instance of fraud on our website. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and update your personal records you will not run into any future problems with the online service.

However, failure to update your records will result in account suspension.
Please update your records on or before November 19, 2005.

Once you have updated your account records, your PayPal® session will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.

To update your PayPal® records click on the following link:

I noticed that the first link was cloaked. It leads you to believe that you are being directed to PayPal's site, but it really leads you elsewhere where it'll ask you questions pertaining to your PayPal account.

Regards,
Steve

What do you mean they won't do anything? They always say they are going to forward it to the authorities, but who would they forward it to?

Well, in any case, if you get a message that looks phishy, forward it to [email protected] or [email protected] and they'll confirm it.

Apparently if I listened to these guys (the scammers), every account I have practically I've been deleted or limited by. :) It's getting crazy. Yesterday I got about 7 messages of this type and about 4-5 that I've been deleted off the server that is my incoming mail server (so how would I get their mail?).

it's been around long time. gmail conveniently marks it as phishing email.

Most likely a phishing mail imo. Better delete it.

PayPal don't call there members just member or value member, and they call their member as name.

If there is no name, it should be fake or scam email.

Not sure if Paypal are getting any better but here is a little story for you that happened a couple of years ago.

As some of you know I used to run a hosting business and I was checking through one of our servers as there seemed to be some unusual activity. I found it was being generated by one of the sites we hosted, so I took a look at the site.

Lo and behold I was faced with an exact copy of a PayPal page asking for the users details so I took a little tour round this guys hosting ( via telnet ) and found a log file that was recording everyone username and password ... At least everyone that fell for the scam.

I removed his main page and put one up warning anyone that it was a scam.

I also made a copy of the log file in a secure location and deleated the original ( and all the other files in his account ). I then e-mailed this log file to PayPal ( after blanking out the passwords so they had everyones username ) and suggested they got in touch with the users and tell them to change their password. I think I had caught it all before the scammer managed to download any but wanted to make sure. I also offered to help them in any prosecution by supplying his details.

I never heard a word back from PayPal.

All the best

Richard

If your every curious, check the urls (by hovering your mouse over the link in the email) and see that it isnt paypal.com, but something like paypal.zzn.com or whichever, this is an obvious scam as the text used for the url says different (like paypal.com).

Just common sense that you check it out fully before doing anything.

Guys, to make things easier, i suggest you create a separate email address just for paypal, so any "paypal emails" sent to other addresses, you can safely ignore.

I got lots of such emails lately. I just never read them and delete instantly when they come through my mail blocker. There was also almost the same phishing email regarding Bank of America account. So beware!
