What would you say is the best resulution for websites, from a design point of view.

Do I still need to cope with screen resolutions such as 800 x 600 or is basing a sites design at 1024 x 768 ok?

Will I alienate people by having a site thats unviewable at lower resolutions, or is it a case that most modern PCs use the higher 1024 x 768 resolution?

The site I am working on is best viewed (currently) at 1024 x 768 and I feel that to lower the available space, will make things look cluttered.

not sure if Ive explained myself very well, but comments are most welcome !

I would still go with 800x600 since many users still use that resolution. Keep in mind that you don't have a full 800 pixels either, go with like 745 or so to be safe with scrollbars and other things the user might have on the side.

Just look at website stats for your visitors, usually it'll show resolutions.

tru, but its not live yet, so no stats available.

what height would you recommend, as for the index page i would like to have no scrollbars needed. I know toolbar heights vary, which will effect usable height, but is there a rule of thumb for this?

so its 800 x 600 = 745 x ??

I usually use 1024x768 on my sites. I recommend that all users be up to speed and drop the lower resolutions.

The height is really going to vary a lot more for each user. This is because it depends on how many toolbars they have, if they have a taskbar, ect.

Having scrolling vertically on a site isn't a big deal for most users. Almost everybody has come to expect it. That is why most modern computer mouses you buy at the store come with a scroll wheel.

must admit, Im tempted to go for 1024 x 768 and tell viewers to get with the program !! (if only it was that simple)

I expect most of my traffic to come from the 15-35 age group, which hopefully should have decent enough computers, and decent enough eyesite to cope with that res.

as for vertical scrollong, I just like to show a clean, uncluttered index page, with the rest of the site using vert. scrollbars.

thanks for your comments guys, next step, Ill post it up in the right forum for a cross platform check, fingers crossed..

Iam still using 800x600 in my websites. Its becoz in Asia and in some parts of world, people are now also using 800x600. Its a standard webpage resolution and is compatiable with 1024x768 also. B-)

If your site is on a monitor with 800*600 res then use 760*$$$ resolution
Thats the best .

I would reccomend not making it bigger than 760 pixels because if I had to scroll another 500 pixels to the left or right I would leave right away. So if your site doesnt depend on your visitors and you dont plan on selling anything then it should be fine, but if you expect to have customers I reccomend not going to large width wise. As far as hieght it doesnt matter considering its very common to scroll down

i would go for 800 x 600 for designing.
but the majority now use 1024 x 768 .

760 is the widest you should go...horizontal scrolling is annoying and there still are some people that use 800x600

1024 x 768 is very common now. only old computers still using 800 * 600
and now 17 and 19 inch LCDs become very popular, so who else will use 800 * 600 after a year or some months

I still design my sites for 800x600 resolution even though I know a lot use bigger ones, since a smaller layout on a big res is better than a big layout on a small res which will make them have to scroll horizontally :(

I Usally make my sites 800x 600, therefore it works in most. I have just recently just started making sites with the 1024x768 resolution

when making a 800x600, make sure the with is atmost 770

I think 770 width is comaptiable. Anyone know, what width is used by phpBB developers? phpBB forum looks great in both the screen resolutions :) .

i think phpbb uses 100%

your question has pretty much been answered already... but one other thing to help you come to a conclusion is look at who the intended audience your website is for and whether the majority will be up to speed or not...

Even though you use 100% in width, you can't get cells in correct positions. phpbb is able to manage it correctly. But vBulletin pages comes in middle of screen in 1024x768. They don't fetch to the whole screen. :)
