Is it best practice to:
  1. Forward the URL of the domain to a custom landing page via your own website with multiple BUY NOW options to choose from (eg: Afternic, SEDO, DAN, etc.)
  2. Forward it to one seller landing page (eg: SEDO)
I feel like the more options you can give a potential buyer the better, but also forwarding them directly to a SEDO landing page the less confused the buyer may be.

Am I overthinking this? What's your experience in terms of traffic/sales conversions?

Thanks!

Personally, I prefer #1 since I have control of the page, basically I can out any content that I want (ads/etc).

Only downfall is that I have to generate traffic via social media, SEO, pay per view etc

Option 1 was what I was leaning towards as well since I've created custom landing pages for each domain that I'm selling. Have you found that promoting via social media has helped? Twitter would probably be the best place?

Thanks!

I usually use stealth forward to a landing page.

I use Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn and there are domainer groups there..I really avoid spamming and or over promoting my links.

Yeah, I'm definitely not planning to do any sort of unsolicited email outbounding/spamming of my domains.

Thanks for the advice, @briguy and @JayT.

Hey, Also, get them listed where a buyer has a quick transfer option (if possible), especially if you dont have your own site as the "comfort/trust" builder.

A good way, IMO, is use the Afternic buy it link (ns3 & ns4 servers) as the buy link - that way they are presented with the GoDaddy (top) and Afternic (bottom) branding + the transaction is far less of a concern.

It may be a good way to start? Even use a parking company to see some traffic or get some clicks & have the link to inquire/buy go to Afternic. Just some thoughts.

Also, this works in line with @briguy 's always good advise - control the experience and have the transaction/negotiation (per your limitations) handled by Afternic - while you build your presence/brand.

Great advice!

The quick transfer option through Afternic has also been a bit confusing. I have bought all of my domains through GoDaddy, but Afternic wants me to transfer them in order to enable quick transfer.

I have disclaimers for domains that I've bought within the 60-day window so that those interested know to buy through GoDaddy instead of other providers for the time being.

Initially, I parked my domains at Sedo, but from what I've read, Sedo is on the decline? None of my domains have many backlinks and they haven't been built out, so I'm assuming parking wouldn't be that beneficial.

I have been forwarding the domains I have to my portfolio site with pages designated for each. I am currently in the process of building a fully custom, branded domain-specific site (to keep the two separate).

In terms of handling payments, what do you recommend if transactions are made through myself and the buyer instead of using for example Afternic as the middle man? For larger transactions, I've read that using Escrow is the best option.

Thanks for the detailed response--any additional insight on this appreciated.

Hi, Yes its all a bit confusing and you will find its repetitive to make make sure you are listing your names properly.
GoDaddy and Afternic are the same company and they are slowing integrating better. But You wouldn't really be transferring anything to afternic, you are authorizing fast transfer - which gives them instant transfer control. You wont know till the sale is done ----- which leads to a side note, dont have BIN on 2 sites (if it sells 2 times you are in trouble)

Still list them on Sedo with a make offer, Uniregistr as well, and anywhere else you cant get them seen. Now, side, if your names were at a reg eligible for Sedo fast transfer (usually GD and Sedo dont overlap) I would reverse and make the BIN where the fast transfer can go.

If you are using Afternic (GoDad) you can feel pretty secure as will you buyer. Selling on your own, ALWAYS!!!, ALWAYS!!!! escrow of some kind, I dont want to recommend as all have opinions - but I have had great luck with Escrow.com, always with any GD/Afternic transaction, (no sales on Sedo, but several inquiries).

as for paying the middle man - when you are turning thousands of $ in transactions - it's time to really rethink (or prepare for). Right now, you are going to be looked at as problem (dare I say the S word? no, in the buyers eyes), dont gibve them a reason to worry about losing thier $ (or identity) to someone who has the name they want. GoDaddy/Afternic, Sedo, et. take that concern off the buyers plate, and that is a major issue. Think about who you would give your banking info to, online, and make sure you dont let a buyer think twice about buying. (side - why BIN is important).

P.S. For you portfolio site (which is a great idea, and huge for creating your brand) you can use the same-ish set up to take advantage of the 1. GoDaddy/Afternic branding (24/7 phone as well) + 2. Have your portfolio site (+traffic).
When you list your name on Afternic (I'll assume you are using the "new" GoDaddy interface?

Just list them there, price them, etc, then let Afternic create the sales page and whatever else it wants to set. Change your name servers to your portfolio after (anyway that works for you, I have a lot of names so stick to processes) so when typed in it goes to your site & have your inquire set to the Afternic link (based on NS3 & NS4 - not the parking ones). If you want Escrow, PP, CC, etc. just add that link instead to kick of the transaction.

I hadn't even thought about multiple BIN site listings for each domain as a problem. I've since corrected that as suggested to "Make Offer" while still keeping Afternic as BIN.

Thank you for all your help, @DnameAgame!
