Paypal "subscriptions" cost you $$$

I got a Paypal receipt today for $99.99 from a company I didn't recognize. My first thought was a scam or that I"d accidentally signed up for something; however, I noticed the subject line called it a "subscription" payment.

I logged into Paypal and checked my subscriptions and, much to my surprise, I had several small recurring monthly payments scheduled. There were some monthly charges I knew about, like $9.95 per month to DomainTools, but there were also a couple of services I had subscribed to a year or more ago that I'd forgotten...like stupidvideos.com and freewebs.com. I don't know how I missed these, but with all the Paypal usage domainers have, it's pretty easy to let something slip by.

Turns out, the $99.99 charge was billed once per year from ValueAddons.com. I had written to them to cancel my account a couple of years ago and forgot all about them. I didn't realize I needed to cancel the payments in Paypal, too.

I encourage everyone to check their accounts asap...and check them from many years back, as some subscriptions only show up the year they were created.

Here's how to check and cancel unwanted subscriptions:

1. Log in to your PayPal account.
2. Click "History" at the top of the page.
3. Select "Subscriptions" from the "Show" menu.
4. Check the "From" box and change the "from" date back several years.
5. Click "Search."
6. Click "Details" to view the details of a specific Subscription Creation.
7. Click "Cancel Subscription."
8. Click "Cancel Subscription" again...and give it a minute to resolve.

If your subscription is a non-recurring subscription, you will see your "Subscription Completion" already posted and no future payments will be deducted from your PayPal account.

Excellent advice from a senior member. I have done the same. LocoDomains.com makes you sign up for a recurring payemnt when you use Paypal. I do it, then go back, and cancel it.
Even senior members can forget to cancel a recurring payment. Nothing worse than losing a $100, when you didn't plan on it.

Realized one reason I missed the billing receipts was that it's very easy to overlook mail that goes to a hotmail address.

Is possible too with the terms like Godaddy / Autorenewals. One of My customer had an old Domain in godaddy, and whem she regged a domains some weeks ago in that. i was billed. Error, yes, but arghhhh

Of course you should check your credit card bills too. That's where I find the most unwanted billings. But here's one that I did not know could happen.

Several months ago a solicitor called at work selling web development services. My husband said no thanks and that we were in the process of creating a new site. The caller said but wouldn't you like your site to get lots of traffic, SEO, page rank, etc? Steve simply answered yes and ended the phone call.

Last week we got our business telephone bill and there was a $49 recurring monthly charge for web development services. We never authorized anything and had no idea someone could get charges added to your phone bill. The phone company took it off but it was a hassle and wasted about an hour in the day.
