Backordering

Is there a way to check if someone has backordered a domain?
Just in case I would like to backorder the same domain?

I don't think there is a tool but I know if it's a good name it will be backordered. Usually you can tell by using GoDaddy and it will say another user has backordered it already. That's what I do at least.

I've never backordered anything. Does it work like if the current owner forgets to renew it, then its reserved for you? Or does it automatically transfer right to your account?

Well a company checks if it's available and once it is the company tries to register it. Some companies check more often then others and they get it. It all depends on the timing, you are never guaranteed to get it. There may also be an auction after a certain company gets it.
