So I have a domain which expires tomorrow.

Marcaria want £23 (around $35) for renewal and I want to transfer it to a $9.95 registrar.

I have asked via live chat a couple of times for an auth code but both times - they ask "be patient"

They are obviously playing me

Thoughts & suggestions please?

On toll free number - was put on hold until they decided that there were no available agents and asked me to leave a message.

On other number - got disconnected
trying again in a few mins

It sucks that their telephone support is unreachable. :td:

They basically holding your domain hostage.

Happened to me before at a small registrar a few years ago.

They want the renewal fee it seems...

So, one more question from me related to this problem. If I have initiated the transfer 2 days before it expired, will it be transferred? I have never done such things, and now I'm waiting for the transfer of an expired domain...

Thanks for RT

They replied with text below

I replied with

1. Livechat operator should have known the deal with .ru domains - given they are an international registrar

2. That I was looking at an alternative of $9.95

They replied with apology and that they would renew it for £7 GBP - which I accepted.

So - result in the end but far from impressed...

Dear Jonathan,

Thank you for contacting us.

We are sorry to hear that you wish to transfer out your domain names. Please let us know why you prefer another registrar over Marcaria.com so that we will be able to work on that issue and improve our service for next time. We would be happy to discuss any issues related to prices.

Please note that there is no auth code for .RU domain names, your new registrar needs to fill the attached form (as a link at the end of this message), send it back to us in order our CEO can sing it and then we need to send it by regular post to Russia. This process can take months because Russia authorities insist in receiving the documents by post (we have tried they to accept them by fax but it is not possible).

Your domain name expire in 2 days. Another option for you will be to let the domain name expire and then register it again with your new Registrar. If you want to proceed this way you need to contact them in order to request "back order" service and so they should be able to register your domain name as soon as it becomes available again.

Please let me know how you would like to proceed and feel free to contact me at any time if you have any further questions.

Best regards,

Oh and I left a sharp voicemail on each number also

Yes, it should still transfer perfectly. I did this at Moniker before... even with their 7 day waiting time going past expiry, it was successful.

It depends on the winning registrar. Namecheap (and possibly their upstream Enom) don't allow transfers for domains that have less than 7 days left. Godaddy does allow it and I think internetbs does too.

I guess that's a solution to their mess-up! They still pocket some cash.

:o

This is about the worst advice a registrar could ever give!

Let your name expire and then backorder it elsewhere??? They are risky and unprofessional

Yes, it should be ok if you get the auth code and complete the transfer now.

I have already got the transfer code and completed the transfer 4 days ago. It expired 2 days ago, so I was wondering if the Moniker will allow it to be transferred or ask to renew it before the transfer.

Oh I never seem to get beyond the first line of helpdesk/canned answers for some reason on first read but it does seem a little off key for a registrar to say the least...

I took the $9.95 renewal - moving all domains out ASAP and sorting the .ru later...

Thanks for your help
