Atom / Atom.com - Marketplace (formerly Squadhelp)

Hey Folks,

I've just started using squadhelp.com to list some of my brandable. So far I have 76 domains listed, there is no fee to list. I've had some decent action so far in the way of interested buyers but no sales as of yet. I've only been with them for 1 week now.

A bit of a summary review of SquadHelp:

PROS
  • No Listing fee
  • No Logo design fee
  • Ability to submit your names to end users holding naming contests
  • Ability to chat directly or send a message directly to end users.
  • Stats of your marketplace domains are shown in the marketplace dashboard.
  • Their customer service and support has been great, 24hr a day chat.
  • Ability to increase or decrease the list price of your domains or to show a discount. You can decrease or increase the price yourself by $200. If you want to lower more, you can contact support.
  • End users can shortlist your domains before they make a decision on which they want to purchase. The number of shortlists is shown in you marketplace dashboard.
  • When you submit your names you get to set the price you wish to get. Because their commissions are high I recommend listing at a higher price to offset the commission costs.
  • Their landing pages are fairly basic but they work. Because the marketplace is fairly new, I'm sure we will see style improvements in the future.
  • One thing I really like is they accept multiple extensions. I have listed .co and .io along with .com
  • Each seller gets a direct link to their marketplace portfolio, HERES MY PORTFOLIO. It is handy if your trying to p[promote your portfolio through social media.
  • I like that their marketplace doesn't have tens of thousands domain listings like BB. They are fairly strict on the domains they accept to list and so this helps keep the number of domains in the marketplace down and gets your listings more exposure.
CONS
  • Their commissions are very high, depending on the domain name they are usually between 30% and 35%. However, there are no listing fees, no logo design fees, so in the end their commission is very similar to brand buckets.
  • Their logos are not top quality, in fact I requested to have some of my logos remade.
  • I think they have a big backlog of logos to design, the wait time for logo design has been around 1 week, but your names are still listed while the logos are being designed.
  • After your names are accepted you need to agree to their commission rate, at this point you also need to apply your own keywords, descriptions etc. I found this was very time consuming.

30-35% commission is reasonable when Atom really promote your domains.

But its impossible to be implemented effectively, cause there is thousand premium domains.

Your sale actually dominated by type in traffic
That's true. The more domain volume they get the less effective. 30% is too high.

Dictionary .com terms (which are the primary ones that get direct traffic), pay lower commission. A dictionary com is highly unlikely to be set at a price that incurs 30% commission. Made up brandables are highly unlikely to get any type in traffic, thus likely, but not always, requiring a brandable marketplace to sell.

Ultra Premium - Atom Commission
  • If the domain sells for $100,000 or more, you pay 15% commission (based on the final selling price)
  • If the domain sells for less than $100,000, you pay 20% commission (based on the final selling price)
  • A custom commission may be set for some ultra premium domains, which will be communicated with the seller upfront. The listing will be published upon acceptance of the commission by the seller.

The sweet spot for me is two words Dictionary .com terms. $1000-$5000.

And I don't see much point in listing with Atom if not going with the Premium listings. Might as well stick with Godaddy for better exposure.

You can list on Afternic and Atom at the same time. You lose nothing in terms of reach. Atom offers a commission match program which helps remove some of the sting of pointing NS to Atom (at your price level, ~5%). https://helpdesk.atom.com/en/articles/9737210-atom-com-commission-match-guarantee

So your options for $5k or lower names (which, by definition at that price point, are unlikely to be premium enough to get any direct type ins) are:

Afternic w/ Boost (NS pointed to Afternic) : 20% commission
Afternic w/ Boost (NS not pointed to Afternic): 30% commission (potentially reduced via commission match)
Atom (NS pointed to Atom): 30% commission - with a 5% kickback if the name sells via Afternic.

So your decision point is not "30% is too much". It's really a 5% or 10% difference. Is Atom's marketing worth an extra 5 to 10% difference for 2 mashed up keywords that likely get no direct type in traffic? If they get direct traffic, then they are likely worth more than $5k (putting the commission at 25%, further reducing the difference between Atom and Afternic).

For me, the answer is obvious, Atom is worthy. I pay 5%, sometimes 10% - to get extra marketing. The name of this game is sales. You want the extra 5-10%, raise your price. Most domains are price elastic anyway

You have to make your own decisions of course. I greedily personally hope you choose not to list on Atom, less competition and more views of my names vs others sellers.

One of my domains got 2 repeat visitors everyday for 4 consecutive days untill yesterday. Seeing that i started to get an idea that that domain is underpriced and can be sold for a higher price ๐Ÿค‘ and so increased just $800. I dont see the repeat visit today till now ๐Ÿค•. Not sure if its because of weekend or my domain lost its fan.

Quick Update: We've added the ability to opt out of Escrow.com if you prefer not to offer it.
You can update this in Marketplace Settings > Promotions & Selling Tools.

@Atom - How long should it take to remove the Escrow.com option? I opted-out as soon as I saw this post but the names haven't been updated yet.

Same here. The escrow.com offer to buy is still present after opting out hours ago.

If it's like other changes, it might take a few days to be fully synched.

Do you use premium? I can see that being an advantage.

Switching nameservers from Afternic to Atom and listing on Atom without being premium seems like a trade off, but I'm still learning if somehow non premium Atom listing would get more views than afternic.

Just out of curiosity... Where/how do you think GoDaddy is giving you better exposure?

@Atom.com - Hello, I do not see any place to provide my escrow.com account credentials for integration which leads me to believe all escrow.com transactions would be conducted through atom's account OR do you ask the buyer to create their own account?

Either way, if a buyer does choose Escrow.com how can we follow the status of the transaction going on at escrow.com?

Well, if someone types in my name in godaddy search without extension, my domain shows up first with .com. So, I assume their registration path has more volume than Atom?

At $800 that is a standard listing ? For standard that is a good sign. I find a really good indication of interest is repeat visits by the same visitor on more than 1 day.

Regular repeat visitor is interesting and unusual. Traffic seems to go way down from Friday to Sunday at Atom, so it might just be that. Hopefully he/she will come back and actually make an offer or buy! Best wishes.
