Atom / Atom.com - Marketplace (formerly Squadhelp)

Hey Folks,

I've just started using squadhelp.com to list some of my brandable. So far I have 76 domains listed, there is no fee to list. I've had some decent action so far in the way of interested buyers but no sales as of yet. I've only been with them for 1 week now.

A bit of a summary review of SquadHelp:

PROS
  • No Listing fee
  • No Logo design fee
  • Ability to submit your names to end users holding naming contests
  • Ability to chat directly or send a message directly to end users.
  • Stats of your marketplace domains are shown in the marketplace dashboard.
  • Their customer service and support has been great, 24hr a day chat.
  • Ability to increase or decrease the list price of your domains or to show a discount. You can decrease or increase the price yourself by $200. If you want to lower more, you can contact support.
  • End users can shortlist your domains before they make a decision on which they want to purchase. The number of shortlists is shown in you marketplace dashboard.
  • When you submit your names you get to set the price you wish to get. Because their commissions are high I recommend listing at a higher price to offset the commission costs.
  • Their landing pages are fairly basic but they work. Because the marketplace is fairly new, I'm sure we will see style improvements in the future.
  • One thing I really like is they accept multiple extensions. I have listed .co and .io along with .com
  • Each seller gets a direct link to their marketplace portfolio, HERES MY PORTFOLIO. It is handy if your trying to p[promote your portfolio through social media.
  • I like that their marketplace doesn't have tens of thousands domain listings like BB. They are fairly strict on the domains they accept to list and so this helps keep the number of domains in the marketplace down and gets your listings more exposure.
CONS
  • Their commissions are very high, depending on the domain name they are usually between 30% and 35%. However, there are no listing fees, no logo design fees, so in the end their commission is very similar to brand buckets.
  • Their logos are not top quality, in fact I requested to have some of my logos remade.
  • I think they have a big backlog of logos to design, the wait time for logo design has been around 1 week, but your names are still listed while the logos are being designed.
  • After your names are accepted you need to agree to their commission rate, at this point you also need to apply your own keywords, descriptions etc. I found this was very time consuming.

Submitted names with coins 18 days ago - still waiting for review. The new in house review system has significantly slowed down review times. Atom review times are starting to look like BrandBucket now

Has anyone sold a name with Atom that went through Escrow.com? If so, did it take longer than usual to get paid?

Yes I have, and yes it did.

It took longer for Atom to advise me that it had even been sold, and then after certifying the domain had been sold, it then took a few days more for Escrow.com to release the funds.

I'm really not so concerned with the extra time, but with the fact that Atom doesn't immediately tell buyers their domain has been sold through Escrow. A seller could easily sell it elsewhere, or worse, assume the buyer had passed and offer them a lower price.

Due to this I am very, very, very patient with all Atom transactions and always wait a few days before reinitiating contact.

In my case it was 5 days ago when I pushed the name to Atom. Still no payment sent. That doesn't seem right.

Yep. I wasn't told about Escrow.com until I asked them several times why the payment hasn't been sent yet.

If the buyer paid (which they did) and the name is in Atom's possession (which it is) why does it take Escrow.com so long to give Atom the "go ahead" to pay us??

What are they inspecting?
It's used for merchandise sales. Domains have the same option, and it can vary from one day to several.

I hope everyone badgers @Atom to give us the option to remove escrow.com from sales.

I couldn't agree more. I'm not gonna lie, I'm considering not using Atom because of Escrow.com

I am thinking the same. I've been trialling them for the last month and a half. I sold two domains on Afternic in that period, even though the names point to Atom.

Interesting. I had a very similar experience.

My biggest sale last year was an Atom premium, but the buyer purchased through Afternic and paid 10% more.

How common is this you guys think?

Hard to say. But I'm guessing it's fairly common to have a name sell on Afternic when the landing page is on Atom. Trust me when I say it's not fun to pay Afternic 25% commission due to the DNS being set to Atom. Sure, we can increase our prices on Afternic to cover that increase (which I did) but are we shooting ourselves in the foot because the name is now too expensive to sell on Afternic's network (where it's more likely to sell)? Tough call.

Are there any penalties for not participating in the open contests on Atom?

Yep. I wasn't told about Escrow.com until I asked them several times why the payment hasn't been sent yet.

No, I meant the SOLD notification, not the payment being transferred to your account.

When a customer "buys" a domain on Atom and selects "escrow.com" as their payment method there is a delay (a few days) in sending that "you've just made a sale" notification to the seller, until Atom actually receives confirmation from escrow.com.

If the offer acceptance and payment occurs on Atom, the notification is sent immediately.

It's those "few extra days" that bother me, as in one case I could have easily sold the domain through a private offer, but I inquired on the Atom chat window to see if the buyer was still interested (my offer had EXPIRED) and they responded "we paid via escrow a few days ago". Huh?

'Looks at Offer again... yep, still says EXPIRED.'

It could have been a nightmare scenario for everyone involved, but Atom has stated they don't want to jump the gun and tell a seller that a domain has sold until 2-3 days later when escrow confirms they have received a payment.

Personally, I think they need to provide some kind of communication that the Offer has been accepted and a potential escrow.com payment could be coming in for this domain.

I already have, multiple times, as it really slows down my negotiations when I don't know if an offer has been accepted or not. Now I send in an offer and wait 2-3 days after it "expires" to send any further communication.

If I see EXPIRED on an Atom offer but it was actually accepted and promised to pay via escrow.com, then there definitely needs to be some kind of warning or note stating this. Because all I see is EXPIRED OFFER and I think they're not interested at that price, so I move on.

What if, in that 3-4 days of "escrow silence" I sell the domain elsewhere? What if I send a lower counter offer *after* the buyer has accepted and paid via escrow.com? What if I decide to keep the domain and remove it from all marketplaces?
