Atom / Atom.com - Marketplace (formerly Squadhelp)

Hey Folks,

I've just started using squadhelp.com to list some of my brandable. So far I have 76 domains listed, there is no fee to list. I've had some decent action so far in the way of interested buyers but no sales as of yet. I've only been with them for 1 week now.

A bit of a summary review of SquadHelp:

PROS
  • No Listing fee
  • No Logo design fee
  • Ability to submit your names to end users holding naming contests
  • Ability to chat directly or send a message directly to end users.
  • Stats of your marketplace domains are shown in the marketplace dashboard.
  • Their customer service and support has been great, 24hr a day chat.
  • Ability to increase or decrease the list price of your domains or to show a discount. You can decrease or increase the price yourself by $200. If you want to lower more, you can contact support.
  • End users can shortlist your domains before they make a decision on which they want to purchase. The number of shortlists is shown in you marketplace dashboard.
  • When you submit your names you get to set the price you wish to get. Because their commissions are high I recommend listing at a higher price to offset the commission costs.
  • Their landing pages are fairly basic but they work. Because the marketplace is fairly new, I'm sure we will see style improvements in the future.
  • One thing I really like is they accept multiple extensions. I have listed .co and .io along with .com
  • Each seller gets a direct link to their marketplace portfolio, HERES MY PORTFOLIO. It is handy if your trying to p[promote your portfolio through social media.
  • I like that their marketplace doesn't have tens of thousands domain listings like BB. They are fairly strict on the domains they accept to list and so this helps keep the number of domains in the marketplace down and gets your listings more exposure.
CONS
  • Their commissions are very high, depending on the domain name they are usually between 30% and 35%. However, there are no listing fees, no logo design fees, so in the end their commission is very similar to brand buckets.
  • Their logos are not top quality, in fact I requested to have some of my logos remade.
  • I think they have a big backlog of logos to design, the wait time for logo design has been around 1 week, but your names are still listed while the logos are being designed.
  • After your names are accepted you need to agree to their commission rate, at this point you also need to apply your own keywords, descriptions etc. I found this was very time consuming.

AI's opinion means nothing to me. Real people? That's what I'd want to know about if I was a buyer.

Atom already described to us both the fact that buyers do want this sort of stuff - and whatever they roll out is a "test" and they only roll out whatever increases STR.

If it doesn't I assume it won't be rolled out. So the reality is, let's see what it does. I don't like it either - but who cares what we think. If it lifts STR, then I'll bet we'll both love it.

That said, weโ€™re a deeply data-driven company. Every product update we launch โ€” including this one โ€” is aimed at one thing: increasing sell-through rate.

When we first introduced AI-generated descriptions, many believed they wouldnโ€™t move the needle. Now, we have clear data showing a measurable increase in STR.
I'd love to see clear data on STR for miminal landers vs. AI built landers with all the bells and whistles.

And to your point: search is absolutely critical. Weโ€™re actively working on smarter, more intuitive search tools since that has a direct implication on domain discovery.
Respectfully, I ain't buying your search is absolutely critical. You've been selling premium domains for over 6 years and you just recently added a hobbled version of exact match and that likely was only because of so many of your users were/ are screaming what the heck?

I completely agree that if something will improve STR then sign me up but I'm not willing to just take someone's word for it either.

One thing I have noticed is GoDaddy starting to use AI generated logos and descriptions on some of their expired domains which would indicate they have an effect but data would be nice.

Ultimately the best way to improve STR is to improve the quality of our names.

Videos are great for creating domain promo posts for social media. The script would need to be shown as subtitles. Video + Subtitle is popular on social media.

@Atom.com Will you include it free and give option for us to prompt?

I'd agree with this - but it has to be alongside search. Having the best house in the neighborhood that has no roads leading to it - makes it really hard to find that house.

Here's a video with text overlay i created for 1 of my domain using Mac OS app and Eleven Labs for voice. This was done last year, the Ai TTS is much better now.

When we first introduced AI-generated descriptions, many believed they wouldnโ€™t move the needle. Now, we have clear data showing a measurable increase in STR.

Same with AI-powered merchandising. Initially met with skepticism, but itโ€™s led to a significant improvement in search engagement and buyer discovery.

It is obvious that providing text-based content directly related to the domain name is very valuable in terms of SEO. However, making people listen to robots that talk for 3 minutes saying "This name is so powerful, magnificent, unbelievable!" will not contribute to STR or SEO at all.

People generally prefer podcasts in their free time, or while running, or just to have a background voice while preparing food. Do you have any statistics that show that listening to podcasts, especially specific to the domain market, increases the motivation to make a purchase?

Yes, the voices sound a little robotic today. But just like the rest of AI, voice tech is improving rapidly โ€” and weโ€™re confident theyโ€™ll sound more natural in the coming months.

AI text-to-speech products that are pretty close to natural human intonation are currently available on the market. The video you gave as an example is a type of voice synthesis technology from 5 years ago.

And to your point: search is absolutely critical. Weโ€™re actively working on smarter, more intuitive search tools since that has a direct implication on domain discovery.

My personal suggestion to you is to focus your priorities on important points. While there are much more crucial points to solve, innovating just for the sake of innovating will not benefit you or your users. Otherwise, I am never against you bringing new ideas to the market and trying new things.

Maybe. Maybe not. It's worth a test. If it doesn't lift STR - the project should be abandoned. I hope they are launching as a test - and not full rollout, regardless of what sellers say they want. Many polled people say one thing and do another. But as a test, sure, it can be tested. Luckily Atom has the size to do proper multivariate testing.

Some logos are now coming out with a dark line on an edge, anyone else seeing this?

I've said this before and I'll say it again. If you have domain recommendations on, it still recommends names who have it off.

Atom has set my new bin as the higher limit after I dropped the price during the .com birthday sale.

Ex: Price was 29,999, drop to $14,888. Now $14,888 is the new limit.

@Atom.com - I received an offer on a name 4 days ago. I responded to the Atom broker with my floor price and haven't heard anything since. Is 4 days a normal amount of time to not hear back? (I'm honestly asking, not being snarky). Most of my names are BINs so I have very little experience with MO.

Only for this one name? or all the names that were part of the sale?

I manually lowered the price for three names. This was not done using the Add Discounts feature.

Out of the three names, I was able to change back to its original price for two names, while the other name was set to a lower price limit.

@Atom.com

This is the analytics you show for our names. May I suggest showing views and shortlists over time (on a graph) so we could see trending popularity? A lump # doesn't tell us whether a name is getting more or less popular.

Some years ago Grant (and/or Atom) responded within this thread stating STR wasn't correlated to views and/or shortlists. I even responded to that link more recently, but can't find it now. Does anyone know which Post # it was? Someone shared it previously - so I know a frequent reader here knows how to re-access it.

One thing Dan (and to a lesser extent Afternic) had was the graph. In fact, that should be a minimum requirement feature for any platform with analytics.
