Guys, my ATM card was so worn out and so old, almost no one could read the strip on it anymore. Anyway, I stuck it into a Bank of America ATM and boom it ATE IT! :o

It said something like "cannot read card, for security purposes we have gobbled it up!"

Very sad. I called my bank and it will take up to 10 days to get another card so I will have no money till then.

Horrible practice Bank of America.. I already refuse to get an account with them and now I wont ever use their ATMs.

Just a heads up guys in case you have warn down card strips!

Oh wow, sorry to hear about that.

Ask for a supervisor, they can escalate the matter so you can have a card within 48 hours.

Also, you may want to go to your local branch, they can issue an ATM card for use in the mean time.

Good luck...

Sorry, but I couldn't help laughing when I read the above.

Lucky there are no Bank of Americas where I live, as far as I know ;)

Doesnt matter whether there is or nor, any bank machine will eat the card if it think something is wrong or it is too damaged.

This happened to me a few months ago! I was on a night out and just left all my friends to get a taxi home. But i needed a tenner for the fare so went to an ATM and the machine ate my card. I literally screamed since I was miles from home and had no money which resulted in a horrific 3 hour walk home in sub zero conditions :hehe:

Ohh I didn't realize this, thanks!!

lpstong, yep I ordered a new one.

Hurley4540 yes the banks have to take precautions.. but I think its only a matter of time before someone sues them for loss of time, money, damages, for eating a card when the card is the user's card right? Especially in this day and age where people sue for everything  I realize they have to take precautions but not stealing other people's property - I think its wrong. :(

im sure there is a disclaimer / TOS or something you agreed to when you signed up that states they are not responsible !
Banks have money to protect them from that

heh, nice. Try coffee. :p

MJ, I remember when the latest and hippest thing for thieves to do was put a plastic sleeve in the ATM card readers. They would then position themselves somewhere where they could see people typing their pins in. If I remember correctly, the card could still be read, but not returned. So people would enter their pins (while being watched by the thief) and not get their card back, thinking the "machine gobbled it up". Then the low life money stealing scum would just walk up, reenter the pin, and have his way with their account. Be thankful Bank of America (and most atms, with the exception of convenience store ones) have upped their security.

You do not own the bank card. The bank card remains the property of the bank.

Which would you prefer anyway? Making it easier for theives or for you to have a few days inconvenience?

I think their preferred method (apart from mugging you after they see you type in your pin) is to actually replicate the card. Hence why you should not use a machine that does not look right or you are suspicious of where the bank machine is.

Also be careful when paying in restaraunts etc try to never let them leave with your card as it is very easy to replicate the card with the right equipment (even chip and pin cards)

I have a habit of withdrawing money befroe heading to the casino and leaving my card in the ATM.. if you leave it in the ATM for a length of time, it sucks it in so it won't be stolen by the next customer. Usually you can retireve it the next day or get a temporary ATM card til your replacement arrives.

Last week, payday... Early morning before going to the office, I went near the bank to withdraw. When I entered my ATM card, I thought everything's going to be fine.. I could hear the machine counting the money inside..but after a few minutes of waiting, My ATM didn't come out as well as the money.. Gosh I was so worried coz I'm going to be late and I don't have money. I couldn't leave the machine thinking somebody's going to get it there once it comes out after I leave.. I've waited for 10 minutes and even kicked the machine twice then whew!! thanks God it went out and I felt relieved-- Glad I just came in the office right in time:)

if this happens that in the Philippines bank we can just approach any teller and inform them about the issues, and they will advise us to approach this supervisor so and so and they can get your card out at the same day about 15 to 30 minutes manually done, they go at the back of the atm machine, and pull it up for you.
