Bad Day: Lost My Debit Card

Now I had a bad experience today.. I took $200 out of the ATM here in town before going to the casino and inadvertently left my card in the slot. I didn't realize it until a few hours later when I was at the casino and went to take more money out. When I got back to town, of course the card wasn't there in the slot at the bank any longer. Fortunately, when I checked online, no one at the point has used it for any purchase (it's a debit card but can still be used online or at a restaurant, for example). Not to mention, whoever got the card got to see my balance receipt (I found that on the ground) so they know exactly how much I have in my account.

To top it all off, I was playing my last $80 in a $5 Lucky Leprechaun machine and hit a bonus screen for $300 and figuring I could always take more out of the bank spent it all back in... bad day all around.

I don't care too much about the money at the casino but have checks drawn against the money in the bank so hopefully no one will use that card. (I emailed and called the bank but it's a holiday weekend so...)

why do people post stuff like this in online forums? We all do stupid things & make mistakes all the time, but most of us just keep it to ourselves or those close to us instead of posting it publicly on an internet forum.

Hehe.. and why would that bother you? I don't mind proving I'm an idiot...

According to what my bank says, I'm covered just incase as long as I report the incident within 90 days.

Check with your bank about that.

Yeah, unfortunately on a holiday weekend, all I could do was leave a recorded message and email them so far.. luckily, still no sign anyone has used the card.

Usually a bank has 24/7 lines for stolen or lost cards. Mine does (Bank of America) and I've reported it stolen before at probably 11p at night.

Sorry to hear that! The machines around here (in Ontario) will suck the card back in if it is left in the slot for too long. The bank then cuts up the card and you have to get a new one. Also, you cannot use our cards up here without a PIN number. I find it weird that you don't need a PIN # for your ATM cards in the USA.

Hopefully some kind person picked it up, and popped
it through the letterbox of the bank.
Kind people are thin on the ground in some places, but
sometimes they do crop up.

I hate how for most places they don't require a pin number for charges and debit purchases. I will go to a fast food restaurant and they wont even ask me to sign.

I hope you get that card and number canceled soon Dave.

Sometimes you just got to let it out...

You do need a PIN for ATM's and any checkout that asks if it's a credit or debit card but I've used the card online and at many stores without a PIN.

Did you forget to pick up the receipt too, or did you drop it on the ground?

I found the receipt on the ground when I went back to check for the card.. I'd forgotten both the receipt and the card.

We cannot use our debit cards online. We cannot use them at all without a PIN. Maybe they should implement that down there!

Yeah.. might be a good idea.. I finally got connected to a real, live person and blocked the card permanently so I'm safe at least.

Actually I've enjoyed being able to use it online.. it backs my PayPal account in fact and I've made many online purchases with my debit card, as well as paid for meals, etc in the "real" world. Usually brick & mortar stores will ask for a PIN to use it. I have made several purchases at Walmart (for example) without using the PIN tho.

Thanks for letting me vent, everyone..

Glad to hear you got that card cancelled.

I'm better off without having that option. I'd have NO money!
