Here we go:

If you have been a domainer for awhile and you know what you are doing, class is over and you are dismissed.

For those that are new and want to get in on the .mobi "action" I hope this helps.

At this point, it is EXTREMELY unlikely that you will be able to register a name that is worth more than what you paid for it. (better odds on getting eaten by a shark in Kansas)

So that leaves two options if you are looking to "cash in" on .mobi:

A: Buy a name on the aftermarket while the prices are still low because you believe .mobi will be big in the future

B: Hand Reg (register a .mobi that no has yet) and develop it with the hopes that your efforts will increase the value of the name.

If you don't know a lot about creating a website, let alone a MOBILE website, I highly recommend option A.

Having said that.... There is just so much to learn about buying the right domain that it can't be summed up in one post, let alone one thread.

So my advice would be to pick up some LLL.mobi's on the aftermarket. As it stands they have already increased in value by x10 times the initial investment (assuming a person purchased premium letters at 20$)

For someone that is new these are the "safest" bet (imho) and probably stand a much better chance of increasing in value in the next couple of years than any of the names that are left to register.

If you still want to register you rown name, I wish you the best of luck and encourage you to read as much as you can on these forums before spending any money. Type in OVT, Alexa, Google Results, in the search and read as much as you can!!!!

I only post this because day after day I see new people on the forum sharing the names they have just registered and I believe in most cases it was just a waste of money.

Hope this post can be some help to the new guys out there!

and my disclaimer: this is all just my opinion, people with more experience feel free to add to this!

I started my thread asking people if they are new. With that in mind, don't you agree it would extremely unlikely for them to find a name that is worth more than reg fee? Wouldn't it be more likely that they waste a lot of money regging names that have little or no value?
i am a newbie and i have definitely wasted a lot of money on bad names so i absolutely agree

as far as mobi goes i disagree to some extent, i do agree that people seem to be registering a lot of names that have no real connection to a mobile web access application, somebody, i can't remember who on the forum has regged "jesuit.mobi", maybe they can explain the need people will have to find a jesuit so bad that they can't wait till they get home and use their home pc to go to jesuit..com (or whatever)

but i do think that the mobi domain is so new that the "rules" that apply to buying dot com's may not apply in mobi

though i agree that if a name has no value in dot com space in will probably have no value in mobi space either

i definitely do not see how the traditional keyword formula and typo formula will apply to mobi where people are typing very slowly and looking very specifically on small screens
