Land Rush – Domain name investors begin registering domains. Similar to what takes place when a new extensions is released.
October 2006 TRAFFIC Conference – First Break-Out in aftermarket prices with the sales of Flowers.mobi, Fun.mobi, and Hot.mobi. People are taken by surprise by the level of demand and rise in prices for an extension that is about a month old. Following the auction, there is a buy-out of 3 letter mobi combinations (17,576). One of the fastest buy-outs of 3 letter combinations in any extension.
Fall 2006- Early 2007: Sharp increase in registrations and strong aftermarket sales. Sale of SportsBook.mobi is first 6-figure sale outside a live auction setting. The break-out is being sustained.
Late Winter 2007: Domain blogs make their appearance. After market sales and new registrations for mobi names slow down. Pull-back/Short selling effects
TRAFFIC West March 2007: High expectations for mobi names being auctioned. There are several strong 5-figure mobi sales but no 6-figure sales. Many mobi investors are disappointed with the outcome of the auction. Pull-back continues
TRAFFIC New York June 2007: First time mtld doesn’t auction any premium names. Most of the .mobi names entered into auction have high reserves and don’t sell. New TRAFFIC sales record is made while mobi names severely under perform. Panic selling of mobi names in forums marks end of first pull-back.
Late Summer/Early Fall 2007: Consolidation takes place. Not much action in after market prices or new registrations. Under the surface there is activity. Well known companies begin launching mobi sites. BofA/Hilton/Zagat/etc. Also a new CEO is brought in to bring the mobi extension to the next level. Even with all these developments, the mobi aftermarket is almost at a standstill.
First week of October 2007: First Sedo mobi auction ends with Hosting.mobi becoming the first 6-figure mobi sale through an online auction. Several end users participate in this auction including Insurance.com which purchases Insurance.mobi. Mobi Maven and several members of this forum played a crucial role by contacting end user companies informing them of the mobi auction. Looks like a Stage 2 break-out is forming.
October 2007 TRAFFIC: Break-out confirmed. 3 mobi’s are sold in the 6-figures with active bidding. All mobi names in the live auction are sold.
November 2007 Sedo Auction #2: Break-out continues with more mobis selling for strong prices. Closed mobi sales begin appearing in DNJournal’s weekly reports.
Mid-Novemeber 2007: Lot’s of publicity generated by several mobis sold during the October TRAFFIC auction. Strong feelings on both sides regarding the value of mobi names. This is similar to what takes place when a stock is going through a short squeeze. The stock is surrounded by negativity as the price continues to rise.
What does this mean for us today: We are at the hard right edge and have to make the best decisions without knowing ALL the facts. Looking at the available facts here is what I see.
- A new management team who has wisely decided to release premium names over the next few months. Very strategic move and perfect timing.
- With over 5,000 premium mobi names, it will take some time before this inventory is sold. Opinions can’t hold back these names from being released. Since the names are not all sold at once, this will allow for sustained momentum and exposure.
- Lots of negativity surrounding this extension which is good. If everyone feels the same way, prices don’t have as much upside left.
- Each month, more and more companies are launching mobi sites.
- Traffic to mobi names has been increasing.
