I read a piece a few days ago that said VeriSign could be under a lot of pressure to drop the price of .TV regs. Anyone picked up on that? I wonder if that's why we've seen GoDaddy go down to $19.99, then $14.99 and now $12.99. Are we soon to see $8.99 .TV regs? Has GoDaddy done a deal with VeriSign for cheap .TVs?
There's more to this than meets the eye. In case anyone hasn't noticed, .TVs are now in the no.2 slot on the GoDaddy register panel. .Net and .Org have been relegated to slots 5 and 6 - that's unprecedented. Dot com holds the no1 slot ... but surprisingly dot TV is in no.2 position. I say surprisingly because some short time ago GoDaddy made a proposal to take over the .US registry (it wants to make .US the number one domain in the US) so you have to wonder why .US isn't in the no.2 slot. Is that because GoDaddy has got a hell of a deal from VeriSign on .TV sales? I wouldn't be suprised. VeriSign can't afford to continue to be a prima donna expecting people to reg domain names at $24.95. Why would you do this when you can periodically reg potentially valuable dot coms at GoDaddy for $7.15?
What I think is deplorable is that we've been fed a line by Demand and VeriSign that .TV regs and renewals would be kept at a higher pricing level to set this TLD apart. With .TVs now at $12.99, they are now on par with every other domain. In fact they are generally cheaper than .IN and .CN names. Certainly they are cheaper than MOBIs. So what was all that about from VeriSign and Demand about making .TVs stand out from the pack through higher pricing levels?
I bought a number of premium names under the belief that this TLD would be kept exclusive through higher reg and renewal fees? Now I find that anyone can register a .Tv name for $12.99. Where is the exclusiveness?
