Hello Everybody,

Just got back from DomainFest in Los Angeles and as expected .tv get's no respect. It's like it does not even exist. That is OK, in 2004 when I went to a domain conference my spanish .com's got no respect by so called experts and now they are doing very well.

The mind set of many domainers are stuck in the "what was" or "what is" and not "what will be". As dot .tv (ers), we need to focus on the what "will be" and I believe .tv is the what "will be".

I was suppose to meet with Verisign but they did not show up at the conference. . Chris Sheridan who is a great guy who handles the premiums for .tv was there and was going to set up a meeting with me, him, and verisign and Chris is on our side regarding changes in .tv.

I had lunch with Ron Jackson of DNJournal.com and asked Ron why does .tv seem to get no respect and not even mentioned. He stated what many others say the same, the #1 reason is because of the premium renewals prices. I told Chris Sheridan this and he agreed. If .tv would charge maybe 3-5 years upfront for premiums and than make it $25 a year after that than you will see .tv explode in the domain community.

Also, as I hear a guy from .mobi on the panel discussion talking about .mobi and even seeing .travel people there talking about how great they are, it really makes me sick that Verisign is not present as a sponsor nor having any panel speakers regarding .tv. Some extensions take off all because of marketing, and where the "hell" is the marketing from Verisign for .tv.

I am going to continue to push both Enom/Verisign to show up at these conferences as a sponsor, have panel speakers talk about .tv at these conference, and what is there "game plan" regarding marketing .tv and there pricing structure as well for .tv.

Now why would Verisign care what I think? We'll I am one of the biggest promoters and have a large premium collection of .tv and been investing in .tv since 2000 and they know that. According to Chris Sheridan, they are willing to meet and talk to me and disclose these issues I have addressed.
We will see, because action is louder than words and I am going to keep bugging them.

Bottom line, what I am saying here is what I am seeing in the United States.
.TV in my opinion is going to explode no matter what people say within the next couple years. I know we talked about this before and it's been very frustrating but I feel we all need to really put the "heat" on Verisign/Enom
about issues regarding .tv. That includes e-mails, phone calls, etc. Keep pushing on what changes us .tv(ers) would like to see made. With the economy doing very bad, I think the timing for them to make changes and hear us out is a lot better now than ever before.

Thanks, Jim

My mistake. It's Mike031 who many of us at Namepros.com has exposed as a big fraud and it's my fault getting it confused. My apologies to DCmike77 regarding that.

With that being said, DCmike77 has a right to any opinion he wants and maybe his situation has not been good with .tv and may be bitter because of that. That is his problem and I am glad I don't take advice from guys like DCMike77.

Thanks, Jim

No worries.

It think Bobski said it best: "..still holding some but not with the initial enthusiasm I had 3-4 years ago...." I'm always reading this TV forum every day so hope is always still alive but it's more of a reality check that many of us need to recognize.

And yes, I am a little bitter, because .tv is like a little brain-child with sooo much talent and yet he's being pushed aside with no mentor to guide him to his full potential...

. If you feel that your domains are targeted only to domainers then .tv is not for you, if you are looking for end users or you want to be an end user .tv domain with so many great keywords available with a low price is the extension that fits the best after .com
In fact i feel many companies try to get their .com domain on .tv as well so they can show their media profile.

Well put.
too many people buy to flip but it doesn't work out so they blame the extension, those who bought for the longterm or high price Enduser sales seem to be doing fine in my experience.

Mike,

We really are only talking about the United States. If you look at what .tv is going on in Europe and in Spanish it's exploding right now. Go to the spanish domain forum Demene.com (need translator tool if you don't speak spanish) and look at the subforum .tv and take a look at the .tv sales going on in .tv and all the activity. My .tv portfolio consists of 50% spanish and many are non-premiums because I research were the market is hot. I had one spanish buyer who wanted to buy 8 of my spanish .tv premium names all decent offers. I would of made of return of 10x or more my money if sold and it would of been big news. However, it's too early to sell unless you have to.

Here is the United States we are really a small player with .tv which can change in time but the internet worldwide and it's great other countries are adapting .tv at a rapid rate.

ok lets look into things more carefully mike:

you make comments and offend .tv success investors and developers... ok lets cut to the chase in why you may not like .tv, your tone, the way your angry and the list goes on and on.

but first off-let me tell you something and here is what i learned... i carried 380 .tv names, over 90 percent of them was trash.. i had admitted my mistakes, got rid of my trash, sold a name that surly helped me out and posted the 1 to 5 dollar sales. so i downsized my portfolio-old news, my first year was a learning curve, old news for everyone that knows me and now i am close to 50 .tv names. still want to be down around 25 or 30 names. only go generic .tv names, yearly fees of under 500 a year and picked up a lot of underpriced names with a great yearly fee of under 500.

so then i did some digging, i recall who you were from last year... i see a lot of people come and go into things, hard to keep track of everyone, lol.

lets throw this out and hope you learn from this: failing is good, you learn from it, move on, operate a portfolio you can manage during these rough economic times(im not making the cash i was 4 years ago). then you develope things for cash flow reasons-im not a developer but loving it and loving where im at in my .tv portfolio

so lets cut to the chase:

1. you carried

nudes.tv for 1750 a year, you let it drop but give you credit in trying to move name unlike some ego driven .tv domainers that are afraid to admit failure or bad ego driven(call them the wanna be players and how there the best but drop names)

2. hardcore.tv 3k a year again a drop i believe

so not seeing you post that often here, not knowing much about you, your tone on .tv and trying make jim look bad who is one of the best .tv investors of all time plus he owns tons of generic .com names you seem to be afraid to your own fault

i am so tired of people not admitting there mistakes, life is full of mistakes and mishapes. failure is good. so between those 2 names, your at 4750 a year. i didnt dig into things more things and i dont mean to put you on the spot but reality is this: 1. you overpaid on yearly fee names, i dont think i had heard of "nudes" in years. nude yes-that got sold recently.

hardcore 3k a year... wow...

im also afraid to ask but were these anyway developed? were they parked and relying on ppc indexing? did google de index you and due to ppc parking revenue falling down huge and impacting everyone here? (didnt the impact the developers but 09 is development year for most and me as well)

so how much i love porn names and .tv i can see why your tone had changed and how .tv is failing, .tv isnt going anywhere, these were probably not developed or you or you hired a bad developer...yes adult converts low to sales and free porn stuff-been known that for years.

so dont be coming in here because you lost a shit load of money just on 2 names and i am afraid to look into other issues like hand regs you had, amount of .tv names, are they being parked and are they "branding names" like i did.

lesson learn folks... business 101 sense and i think you need to admit to your own wrong doing, you overpaid on names and no one told you to buy these.

taking hits is ugly, admitting when you made a mistake is ugly but come in here to think you can slame .tv and jim due to your picks is insane and we have a lot of members here.

1. take a night class
2. operate a small portfolio of names
3. develope names that your passionate on or interests
4. generate a small revenue stream
5. flippers in .tv carrying hundreds of .tv names will get burned
6. tough economic times and worldwide recession impacts

mike-i didnt come here to critize you but with hidden objectives by you, i can see how you dislike .tv ... i love my .tv names, the developing phase in my life right now, im learning from experienced .tv people like jim(discovernow and a few others) and were all chasing our dreams. why knock other people dreams or ambitions?

hope you can form a nice .tv model and be a part of the new media group in .tv and in years to come. .tv is here folks, growing like mad and just because ppc parking .com domainers at domainfest dosent get .tv, they are not developers like a richard, or jimbo they continue to bash .tv. many people here have made money cash .tv and will continue to do so. heck, i even got an offer on bird.tv and would be a nice roi now that is developed somewhat vs a parked page.

i wish you the best of luck mike, read this for what its worth and the newer people here-hope you enjoy.

again just my thoughts, shit happens, mistakes happen...learn and move forward.failing is good

now the good news:

he owns some killer .com names and that orlandotravel.com is a great name(off topic from .tv)

more names in .tv he owned or still owns and i wouldnt touch them couple for 500, 1k so that yearly fees are even more then just these 2.

mike-you have some nice traffic names in .com land-congrats

I look at it this way, other than DOT COM and CC TLDs, where other extensions are really taking off. DOT NET and ORG makes money, but those domains are resold at near full price and I don't see much appreciation. DOT ME, BIZ, INFO, CC, MOBI are all in the same boat as DOT TV with respect to resale prices. The question, which domain is advertised on TV more than others, second only to DOT COM and maybe DOT NET.

So in the future, which is what we are all trying to predict. Which extension offers the greatest potential to increase in value.

As with stocks, if you look at purely historical values - you might be holding the next Enron - not the next Google.

Damn, I still wish I hadn't let Hardcore.tv go. That was a category killer!

I also owned 3-4 other premiums for another $3k in wasted $$. But it actually wasn't wasted, it was more like a 'learning experience'

The problem with the original comments on this thread are that people just need a reality check. Dot tv is NOT on a 2-3 year plan. Once you accept and you start thinking about the best way to make money you'll likely consider other options. google is NOT .tv friendly (that was proven on many of the other threads here). At least not YET. So if you're a developer you may want to stick with .com. And,yes, I've developed (halo.tv, orlandotravel.com - currently transitioning from vacationstation.tv - rewardscreditcard.com, etc), but if you listen to Elliot Silver it takes A LOT of work to start moving the needle to get any $$ worthwhile. More than you think

And to all those that have sold .tvs for good $$, nice work. But even a broken clock is right twice a day. Lets not go around and shouting .tv is the second coming. Bragging is great, but considering it the norm is not.

Luckily domaining is just a side-job for me. So it's a little easier to 'experiment' and not lose the house with a mistake. If you want to know more about me feel free to go here. I always enjoy the intellectual banter.

Cheers
-Mike

Mike

I don't know you but no one likes to hear of anyone losing money in any venture - especially one in which the majority of other people/investors are patently doing better than even. I am saddened that it has become just a 'learning experience'. No one wants to hear news like that.

That said, can I also suggest, with respect, that in this instance, it may have been down more to your own investment decisions rather than the extension. I would suggest that $3000 a year on a premium name was perhaps not the greatest decision ever made. High-Premium names, for most people, are really not synonymous with domain-flip riches.

Perhaps in this case it is more the possibility that the clock isn't broken at all, but the reader of the clock is in a different time zone. If this is the case the clock is always wrong.

I think you've answered why you're so disappointed with .TV with this statement. "experimenting" is not 'investing' - but more akin to gambling.

Mike - as I said earlier, and I'm sure many others would concur, nobody likes to hear of a venture falling flat. However, without being rude, blaming the hammer because the nail has been bent is slightly unfair on all those others here who ARE doing well with .Tv.

Talking down .Tv will not make it any less effective in the future of internet TV.

Explaining frankly, where you went wrong with Tv is constructive for others. Complaining about how bad everything has become is just sour grapes.

I genuinely wish you good luck with your other ventures.

Jimbo,

You said it "right on". The great thing about the domain business is like many
businesses, 1 success can make up for 10 failures. I look back to 2000 when I registered about 10 .tv and only 1 out of the 10 turned out to be very good. The other 9 were "duds" like, e-free.tv, notcom.tv, dotcoms.tv etc. All those great .tv's non-premium right there, geo's etc, and I did not even notice. However, the 1, Pornografia.tv non-premium is one of my top .tv today and outweighs all the "duds" I got then. Did I give up? No, I learned, studied, keep my eyes opened, and today I have a .tv portfolio than has done well for me.

Thanks, Jim
